Sloth bear
The Sloth Bear is perhaps the most iconic and widespread bear species in India, endemic to the Indian subcontinent. If you are familiar with The Jungle Book, you know the lovable character Baloo. Yes, sloth bears inspired the character of Baloo. Sloth Bears inhabit a range of ecosystems, from the dry deciduous forests of Central India to the moist forests of the Western Ghats and the Himalayan foothills. Their population, estimated at 20,000 in India, faces threats from habitat fragmentation, human-wildlife conflict, and historical exploitation as “dancing bears”—a practice now largely eradicated.Asiatic black bear
Also known as the Moon Bear due to the crescent-shaped white patch on its chest, the Asiatic Black Bear roams the forested mountains of northern and northeastern India, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. The species is classified as Vulnerable, with an estimated population of 5,400 to 6,750 in India.Himalayan brown bear
The Himalayan Brown Bear, a subspecies of the global brown bear, is India’s largest bear species and a true denizen of the high altitudes. These bears are found in the western Himalayas—Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand—at elevations of 3,000 to 5,000 meters. Sadly, there are only 500-700 individuals left in India, hence, they are considered Critically Endangered. Also read: 8 facts about Assam’s Kaziranga National Park that makes it unique
Sun bear
The smallest of the world’s bear species, the Sun Bear, or Honey Bear, is a rare sight in India, confined to the tropical evergreen rainforests of the northeast, particularly Assam’s Barak Valley. With an estimated 1,000 individuals globally and very few in India, it’s listed as Vulnerable. Also read: 9 places around the world shaped like a ‘heart’
