9 tiny islands in the world that can be explored in minutes

9 tiny islands in the world that can be explored in minutes

Big isn’t always better. Especially when it comes to islands. While most people fantasise about long coastlines and endless resorts, there’s a different kind of thrill in setting foot on a piece of land that barely exists. These islands are so small, they could fit inside a supermarket, and some of them practically do. Whether they’re home to a single house, a lone lighthouse, or just some very confused sea lions, these 9 islands prove that you don’t need size to have a story.

2/10

Just Room Enough Island, USA

This island serves as a perfect example of tiny living. Bought by the Sizeland family in the 1950s, it has just enough space for a small house, a tree, a patio set, and nothing else. At high tide, the waves can dangerously step close to the doorstep. It’s technically classified as the world’s smallest inhabited island, perfect for those who love isolation.

3/10

Simping Island, Indonesia

Simping Island is so small, you can cross it in less than a minute — no joke. But it’s far from insignificant. A small bridge connects it to the mainland, and it features a peaceful Buddhist temple that makes it feel more like a meditation zone than a travel destination.

4/10

Bishop Rock, UK

Standing defiantly in the Atlantic, Bishop Rock is just a rock, with a giant lighthouse nailed onto it. Once manned by keepers who lived there in utter isolation, it now operates automatically. It holds the Guinness World Record for the smallest island with a building on it.

5/10

Rockall, UK

Rockall is less of an island and more of a political stunt. This lonely rock has sparked territorial claims by the UK, Ireland, Denmark, and Iceland. At just 25 meters wide, it’s uninhabitable, though a few brave souls have camped there for a few nights.

6/10

Dangar Island, Australia

Just an hour from Sydney, Dangar Island is car-free, surprisingly green, and full of charm. The only way to get there is by ferry, and locals get around on foot or with wheelbarrows. It has a small population, a general store, and enough stories to keep you entertained over a riverside beer.

7/10

Wizard Island, USA

Formed from a volcanic eruption, Wizard Island sits in the middle of Crater Lake and looks like it was pulled straight out of a fantasy novel. It’s uninhabited but accessible via boat tours in summer. You can hike to the top, explore the crater, and pretend you’re on a quest. Just watch out for snow, as this spot gets seriously chilly.

8/10

Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Isla Mujeres is a small island that feels larger than life. With white beaches, turquoise water, and so much more that it makes for a perfect quick escape from mainland Mexico. Its name means “Island of Women,” and it has both historical ruins and chilled beach bars. A lot more touristy than others on this list, but still small enough to walk across in under an hour.

9/10

Bryher Island, UK

Bryher is home to just over 80 residents, but what it lacks in population it makes up for in rugged beauty. This island is famous for its striking contrasts — rugged cliffs dominate one side, while soft sandy beaches stretch along the other.

10/10

Little St. Simons Island, USA

Okay, 40 sq km isn’t tiny-tiny, but Little St. Simons is so sparsely populated it still feels delightfully empty. Privately owned and accessible only by boat, it’s a dream for nature lovers. You get guided bird walks, kayaking through salt marshes, and stay in charming lodges where you’re more likely to meet an armadillo than another guest.
