9 offbeat hill stations near big cities to make the most of office leaves

If you are a working person, you would definitely know the value of leaves. That break that we want to use wisely, to rejuvenate, and to reset our soul. In such cases, we often want to skip the usual and the crowds, and visit some place that lets us be on our own, without much disturbance or hassle. We surely have Shimla, but with traffic jams, Ooty’s got crowds, and even the secret "off-season" is now everyone else too. But that doesn’t mean we will stop searching. So to sort your itinerary, here are some places within a few hours from your nearest metro city that offer refreshing views, with way fewer people in the frame. (Canva)

2/10

Toranmal

Toranmal should be your getaway place if you are in Mumbai. You will be in peace here, with less crowd to bother you. Located around 500 km from Mumbai, this hill station is nestled in the Satpura range and rarely makes it to mainstream itineraries. Expect mist-covered lakes, dense forests, and sunset points where you might be the only human for miles. (Canva)

3/10

Yercaud

A breezy 4.5-hour drive from Bengaluru, Yercaud is set around a peaceful lake, ringed by coffee plantations and orange groves. This place doesn’t try too hard to impress, which is its charm, a perfect place to laze, sip filter coffee, and not check your email. (Canva)

4/10

Chail

Just two hours from Shimla and around 6–7 from Delhi, Chail swaps tourist crowds for deodar forests and old-world colonial charm. It’s perfect for those craving Himachal’s beauty without the bustle, and if you’re in the mood to splurge, check into a palace-turned-hotel for a royal retreat. (Canva)

5/10

Lambasingi

Known locally as the "Kashmir of Andhra," Lambasingi near Visakhapatnam has actually seen snowfall, which is an unusual weather delight in south India. Even when there’s no snow, the thick fog, pepper plantations, and tiny village vibe are enough to chill your soul. (Canva)

6/10

Kolli Hills

With 70 hairpin bends leading you into its embrace, Kolli Hills in Tamil Nadu is part thrill ride, part tropical retreat. About 6 hours from either Chennai or Bengaluru, it offers waterfalls, forest hikes, and ancient tribal legends. (Canva)

7/10

Chopta

For Delhiites who want snow-capped serenity without the 14-hour Manali haul, Chopta in Uttarakhand is a dreamy alternative. Known as the base for the Tungnath trek, it’s calm, clean, and far from commercial. (Canva)

8/10

Sakleshpur

Just three hours from Bengaluru, Sakleshpur offers railway bridge treks, foggy mornings, and cottages tucked into coffee estates. It’s low on tourist density and high on monsoon magic. (Canva)

9/10

Tawang

Okay, this one’s not super close, around 13 hours from Guwahati, but Tawang is an experience, not just a destination. It’s all about ancient monasteries, dramatic mountain roads, and stars you can see through all night. (Canva)

10/10

Pachmarhi

Tucked in the Satpura range, Pachmarhi is a forested hideaway about 5 hours from Bhopal. With cave temples, colonial architecture, and waterfalls galore, it’s Central India’s best-kept cool secret.
These underdog hill stations near India’s big cities are where you go to breathe, really breathe, without having to elbow your way to the view. So block that long weekend, and set out on that quick trip that you have been planning for a long time. (Canva)
