8 underrated destinations in India that all travel lovers must go to for an unforgettable experience

India is a land of endless wonders, but often, travellers are hesitant to take that chance, mostly because of the fear of the unknown. The result is they flock to the usual hotspots, Goa, Jaipur, Kerala, and so on. So, here at Times Travel, we’ve put together our own list of underrated destinations that are tried and tested, and promise unique experiences, fewer crowds, and memories that last a lifetime. Here’s to all those who are ready to take that chance and travel to explore the unknown with an open heart -because sometimes the best journeys are the ones less travelled, offering truly unforgettable adventures.

2/9

Majuli, Assam

Situated in India’s Northeast, Majuli remains largely untouched by mainstream tourism. While other destinations often steal the spotlight, this river island quietly preserves its charm with verdant landscapes, distinctive tribal traditions, and colorful festivals. A paradise for photographers and cultural explorers, Majuli offers a serene retreat—quite unlike Assam’s more popular Kaziranga—making it a truly peaceful escape.

3/9

Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh

This is another gem from the Northeast. Known for its sprawling rice terraces and the Apatani tribal culture, Ziro Valley is also a music and nature lover’s dream. The Ziro Music Festival has been gaining fame, but the valley itself remains relatively untouched by mainstream tourism.

4/9

Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh/ Uttar Pradesh

Often overshadowed by Varanasi, Chitrakoot is a spiritual and scenic wonder. Waterfalls, lush forests, and temples make it perfect for travelers seeking a mix of nature and mythology. Connected to the Indian epic Ramayana, there are many temples to be explored, and check out places where Lord Ram, Lakshman, and Goddess Sita supposedly took refuge.

5/9

Gokarna, Karnataka

Tired of crowded beaches? Try Gokarna, which offers pristine sands, hidden coves, and a laid-back vibe that rivals Goa’s fame without the tourist hordes. It’s ideal for yoga retreats, trekking, or simply chilling by the Arabian Sea. Legend has it that Brahma, puffed up with pride over creating the universe, went into meditation to atone for his arrogance and lift a curse from Shiva. During this meditation, Shiva appeared, mysteriously emerging from a cow’s ears, giving the place its name: Gokarna, or “cow’s ear.” The Puranas even say that when Parashurama, Vishnu’s sixth avatar, carved out Kerala, he did so from Gokarna down to Kanyakumari.

6/9

Kausani, Uttarakhand

Nicknamed the “Switzerland of India,” Kausani is a quiet hill station with panoramic views of the Himalayas. The lack of crowds makes it a perfect escape for meditation, photography, or sipping chai while watching the sunset over snow-clad peaks. Some of the highlights of this place are Anashakti Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi once stayed, and the secret trails that are waiting for the curious travellers.

7/9

Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

A hidden treasure along the Betwa River, Orchha flaunts stunning palaces, ancient temples, and silent cobbled streets. Unlike the bustling streets of Jaipur or Udaipur, Orchha feels like stepping back in time. Lord Rama is the King of Orchha—and not just in legend. In the 16th century, Queen Kunwar Ganesh, a devout follower of Rama, prayed in Ayodhya for 21 days to bring him to Orchha, despite her husband King Madhukar Shah being a Krishna devotee. Rama agreed to come, but on three conditions: he would be the only king of Orchha, remain wherever he was placed, and arrive at a specific time with monks. The queen accepted, and since then, Rama rules Orchha. Even today, the Ram Raja Temple honors him with a daily guard of honor, no VIPs or officials get the royal treatment.

8/9

Dholavira, Gujarat

For history buffs, Dholavira is a gem. Located right on the Tropic of Cancer, is one of India’s most prominent Harappan sites and among the five largest Indus Valley Civilization settlements. Nestled on Khadir Bet island within the Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary in the Great Rann of Kutch, the 47-hectare city once stretched between two seasonal streams, Mansar in the north and Manhar in the south. Archaeological evidence suggests the site was first occupied around 3500 BCE (pre-Harappan), thrived during the Harappan period, and continued until roughly 1800 BCE, making it a fascinating glimpse into ancient urban planning and desert life.

9/9

Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Known for its stark landscapes, monasteries, and high-altitude villages, Spiti Valley is a dream for adventure seekers and photography enthusiasts. Its remote location keeps the crowds at bay, letting travelers experience true Himalayan serenity.
These destinations reward curious travelers with authentic experiences, fewer crowds, and the joy of discovery. Next time you plan a trip, take cues from this list and explore these hidden treasures.

All these destinations mentioned are NOT underrated at all . Tourists who love to see beauty and nature never miss these places. Tourists with a shopping spree or those looking only for comfort and luxury, will not like such places and hence avoid visiting such lovely locations
