In the vast cosmic play of planets, Rahu and Ketu, represent the mysterious shadow planets, which are often blamed for life’s sudden turns, karmic lessons, and periods of confusion. Yet, they’re also revered as powerful forces that push one toward spiritual growth and self-realisation. Those who have wondered if there are any temples dedicated to them, then across India, there are ancient temples devoted to appeasing these celestial entities. Devotees from across the country visit these places to perform rituals to balance their planetary influences and seek divine grace. Sri Kalahasteeswara Temple – Srikalahasti, Andhra Pradesh

Situated in the town of Srikalahasti in Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh, Srikalahasti Temple is one of the country's most revered Shaivite shrines. Here, Lord Shiva is worshipped as Kalahasteeswara, representing the element of Vayu (air). Interesting to note here is that the temple is also known as Rahu–Ketu Kshetra, and often referred to as Dakshina Kailasam. Also, as per the local legend, this sacred site is where Kannappa Nayanar, one of Shiva’s greatest devotees, offered his own eyes to stop the bleeding from the Shivalinga. Deeply moved by his unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before him and granted him moksha (liberation).

Tirunageswaram Naganathar Temple – Tamil Nadu

Also known as Rahu Stalam, it’s also a revered Shiva temple located near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Shiva as Naganathar and his consort Parvati as Piraisoodi Amman, it holds special significance in Saivism as one of the Navagraha Stalas, representing the planet Rahu. Celebrated in the 7th-century Tamil Saiva text Tevaram by the Nayanmars, it is classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam. There are four majestic gopurams, numerous shrines, and intricately designed halls, whereas the most striking is the grand ornamental hall built during the Nayak period.

Shri Naganathaswamy Kethu Temple – Keezhaperumpallam, Tamil Nadu

Known as Kethu Sthalam, this significant shrine is situated in Keelaperumpallam, about 2 km from Poompuhar in Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Naganatha Swamy and is closely linked with Ketu, the shadow planet, which earns it a place among the famed Navagraha temples. It features a modest, flat rajagopuram and two prakaram. Daily poojas are performed four times a day between 6:00 AM and 8:30 PM, while devotees often prefer to visit during major festivals like Mahashivaratri, Margazhi Thiruvadirai, and others.

Rahu Ketu Temple – Telangana

This temple is dedicated to both Rahu and Ketu, and is known for its peaceful ambiance. Devotees from across the country visit this place, and perform rituals to get rid of various complications, supposedly, arising from Rahu and Ketu’s influence. The temple offers a tranquil environment, making it a spiritually significant stop for those seeking relief from the malefic effects of these shadow planets.

Shri Neelakandeswarar Temple – Gerugambakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Lord Shiva is worshipped as Neelakandeswarar in the Shri Neelakandeswarar Temple, while Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Adi Kamakshi. It has a dedicated Ketu shrine inside its compound and is especially connected to Ketu Bhagavan. By doing poojas here, devotees hope to lessen the karmic difficulties associated with Ketu and promote harmony and balance in their life.

Rahu Temple – Uttarakhand

This temple, which honours Rahu and is located in the highlands of Uttarakhand, is renowned for both its ceremonial relief and its ability to offer a spiritual haven in the outdoors. Devotees can meditate and carry out rituals meant to reduce Rahu-related doshas in this tranquil setting. Pilgrims frequently come to this temple in search of spiritual balance and clarity.
