6 places in India to go looking for one-horned rhinos in the wild

The Indian rhinoceros, or the one-horned wonder as we like to call it, is one of those majestic creatures that pulls visitors in the wild, after tigers. Found mostly in the northeastern parts of India, this creature has a fan following that includes wildlife photographers, conservationists, and the occasional traveller who didn’t expect to be humbled by a giant beast chilling in a swamp.
So, if spotting a rhino in the wild is on your bucket list, and it should be, here are six places where you might just lock eyes with this horned heavyweight.

2/7

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

Kaziranga can be called the rhino capital of the world, home to two-thirds of the planet’s Indian rhinoceroses. These beasts rule the park like royalty, where you’ll see them grazing, wallowing in mud, and wandering peacefully. Take an early morning jeep safari or go old school with an elephant-back ride.

3/7

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam

If Kaziranga feels like out of reach for now, head to Pobitora, the other place in Assam that somehow has more rhinos per square kilometre. It’s compact, accessible from Guwahati, and has a reputation for guaranteed sightings.

4/7

Manas National Park, Assam

Manas is your rhino-sighting location with a side of UNESCO status. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, it’s wild, mysterious, and feels like you’ve stepped into a nature documentary. Apart from rhinos, it’s also home to golden langurs, and a whole lot of natural drama.

5/7

Orang National Park, Assam

Orang is another hidden gem for wildlife lovers. Often overshadowed by Kaziranga, this park still offers great chances to see the Indian rhino minus the crowds. Plus, it’s got riverine terrain, grasslands, and just the right touch of “off the beaten path.”

6/7

Dudhwa National Park, Uttar Pradesh

Yes, rhinos live outside Assam too! Dudhwa is the northernmost refuge of the Indian rhino and part of a major conservation comeback story. It may not be teeming with rhinos like Kaziranga, but the thrill of spotting one here — in tall grass with the Terai’s mystical fog around — is unforgettable.

7/7

Jaldapara National Park, West Bengal

Down in North Bengal, Jaldapara is giving you elephants, bison, peacocks, and yes — rhinos. This park has been quietly doing the rhino conservation thing for decades. Take a jeep or elephant safari and keep your eyes peeled for a massive grey figure hiding in the tall savannah grass. Spoiler: it’s not a rock.
