6 Indian villages that are cooler than most cities

India's cooler villages like Mawlynnong, Tawang, Zuluk, Kalpa, Lachung, and Kibber are not only a respite from the hot urban climate—they also have a distinctive combination of natural scenery, cultural depth, and sustainable living. Located in high-altitude areas, these villages benefit from naturally low temperatures throughout the year, due to thick forests, glacial streams, and low levels of urbanisation. Whether it's the religious peace of Tawang, the environmentally friendly beauty of Mawlynnong, or the rugged peace of Kibber, every village is a respite into nature's peaceful, serene side of existence.

2/7

Mawlynnong, Meghalaya

Customarily referred to as "Asia's Cleanest Village," Mawlynnong is a secluded Khasi village that boasts cleanliness and ecological sensitivity. Each home is engaged in maintaining the village in pristine condition with bamboo dustbins and green-friendly measures. Plastic is prohibited, and smoking is not encouraged. With flower-canopied walks and a strong focus on education and gender equality, Mawlynnong is a living example of how community values can be used to develop sustainable and attractive living spaces.

3/7

Tawang- Arunachal Pradesh

Home to the people of the Monpa Tribe, located in the westernmost part of Arunachal Pradesh. Famous for its uniquely structured monasteries and tribal culture. Bordered by Tibet in the North and Bhutan in the South-West. It celebrates major festivals of the Monpa tribe viz “Torgya’ and “Losar”. It is located at a distance of 183 km from Bomdila, at an altitude of 3500 meters. The best time to visit Tawang is between March and October. Some of the prime attractions in Tawang include Tawang Monastery, established in 1681, Sela Pass set at an elevation of 13,700 ft, Bumla Pass set at 15,200 ft, and Nuranang Falls, a stunning waterfall located near Jang town.

4/7

Zuluk, Sikkim

Located at 2,800 meters on the old Silk Road in East Sikkim, Zuluk has cold weather throughout the year, with summer temperatures between 6°C and 14°C. With its winding roads, wide vistas of the eastern Himalayas, and sparse population, this high-altitude town is famous.
Zuluk is not influenced by urban warming because there is little automobile traffic and no urbanization. It offers a desolate but peaceful scene that is in sharp contrast to the noise and warmth of the city, flanked by rocky hills and often veiled in mist.

5/7

Kalpa, Himachal Pradesh

The grand Kinnaur Kailash mountain range is visible from Kalpa, situated at an elevation of 2,960 meters above sea level in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Due to its elevation, apple orchards, and pine forests, Kalpa has a comfortable amount of coolness during the summer, with mean temperatures ranging from 8°C to 18°C. Its alpine beauty is accentuated by winter snows, and its natural weather is kept intact by the lack of widespread urbanization. Away from the summer heat of modern Indian cities, Kalpa is a tranquil, cool refuge with houses made of stone, ancient temples, and awe-inspiring views of snow-clad hills.

6/7

Lachung, Sikkim

The picturesque hill town of Lachung, which lies at an altitude of 2,600 meters in North Sikkim, has summer temperatures varying between 7°C and 17°C. Surrounded by waterfalls, alpine forests, and hot springs, Lachung's topography with high elevation and glacial melt maintains its freezing temperature. It is the base for tours to the much lower Yumthang Valley and Zero Point. It is a gem in secret for nature lovers and the perfect refuge from the burning heat of the city due to the clean, fresh air filled with the scent of pine.

7/7

Kibber, Himachal Pradesh

At about 4,270 meters, Kibber is among the world's highest motorable villages. It is located in the cold Spiti Valley desert. Even during summer, Kibber's temperatures are between 5°C and 15°C due to its high altitude and desert landscape. Its prolonged cold is caused by its treeless terrain, thin air, and strong winds. It is an entry to the Kibber fauna Sanctuary's fauna and offers stunning views of the Himalayas despite its unforgiving climate. It's a peaceful, cold, and sluggish place to reside.
