5 timeless Agra wonders for every travel bucketlist

Agra, a city with an excellent representation of India's history, is made up of monuments that are architectural masterpieces and representations of eternal love. Agra perfectly sums up the majesty of Mughal architecture with its beautiful marble mausoleum, red sandstone palaces with fortifications, and well-planned urban areas. Any travel bucket list will not be complete without seeing these iconic architectural masterpieces of Agra.

Let's take a look at the list:

2/6

Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb

Also referred to at times as 'Baby Taj,' it's an awe-inspiring Mughal monument in Agra. It is believed to be a blueprint for the real Taj Mahal and also a prominent landmark marking the shift from red sandstone buildings to white marble and elaborate carving work. This monument is a reflection of a daughter's love for her father because this was commissioned by Nur Jahan for her father Mirzā Ghiyās Beg, who received the title of Itimad-ud-Daulah, "Pillar of the State." The charm of this tomb is in its architecture; the tomb is placed in the center of a four-part garden of white marble and intricate carvings.

3/6

Mehtab Bagh

A lovely garden whose name itself contributes towards the elegance of it as it translates to 'moonlight garden'. This is a complex garden constructed by the Mughals on the Yamuna River and was planned as a vital segment of the Taj Mahal complex. This garden was established and embellished by Shah Jahan since he wished to look at the beauty of the Taj Mahal from here, particularly during moonlit evenings. This Charbagh-style garden has walkways, fountains, and pools. Mehtab Bagh is a peaceful park and one of the finest spots in Agra from which one can watch the sunrise and sunset over the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal's reflection in the pools of this garden creates a stunning sight.

4/6

Agra Fort

This fort is situated on the Yamuna River bank in Agra. It consists mainly of red sandstone and was also the principal residence and seat of the government of the Mughal emperors when Agra served as their capital. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its architectural splendour and also possesses great historical significance. A semi-circular in shape fort with circular bastions and a combination of Persian and Timurid architecture with heavy influences from Hindu and Jain design traditions.

5/6

Fatehpur Sikri

A walled city famous for its architectural splendour and its combination of various architectural styles like Islamic, Hindu, Jain, and Persian styles. Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it consists of numerous palaces, administrative offices, and religious buildings that embody the vision of Akbar. It is a living embodiment of Akbar's philosophy of religious integration and political unity. It is one of the best examples of Mughal urban planning and architecture preserved to this day.

6/6

Taj Mahal, Uttar Pradesh

An exquisite ivory white monument built on the banks of the Yamuna River was ordered by the fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to enshrine the tomb of his dear wife Mumtaz Mahal. This lovely monument is a wonderful symbol of love from a husband towards his wife. The Taj Mahal is a beautiful piece of Indo-Islamic and Mughal architecture, a mixture of Persian, Islamic, and Indian designs. This monument has beautiful inlay work and intricate carvings with semi-precious stones like jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise, and jade from across Asia. The main attraction of this monument is the big middle dome surrounded by four small domes with decorated arches and inlay work. This monument is so lovely that it will surely leave you speechless!
