5 snake parks in India that are absolutely fang-tastic and what makes them special

Love them or loathe them, snakes are some of the most fascinating (and misunderstood) creatures in the animal kingdom. In India, where snakes are both feared and worshipped, a few dedicated parks and centers are doing the crucial job of conservation, education, and debunking myths, one hiss at a time. If you’re curious about the limbless wonders of the wild, here are five snake parks in India that are seriously sensational.

2/7

Why visit a snake park?

Besides the obvious "I saw a cobra and lived to tell the tale" bragging rights, snake parks in India play a critical role in conserving reptilian biodiversity, debunking snakebite myths, and fostering eco-awareness. Plus, snakes are objectively cool. They shed their skin, smell with their tongues, and come in 3,000 varieties of awesome.

3/7

Chennai Snake Park, Chennai

Located at Guindy, it’s India’s very first snake park. This one is a legacy left by legendary herpetologist Romulus Whitaker. Located inside the Guindy National Park, it’s home to pythons, cobras, vipers, and even a few crocs. What makes it stand out? Weekly awareness sessions where snakes are the stars, not the villains. You will find the snakes all housed in glass-fronted reptile-friendly and visitor-friendly enclosures.

4/7

Parassinikadavu Snake Park, Kerala

This park isn’t just a snake display center, it’s also a research and rescue institute. Housing over 150 species of reptiles, it’s big on educating the public about the difference between venomous villains and harmless herby friends. You also get to see the infamous King Cobra here. Also, it’s right next to the Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple, where tradition meets conservation.

5/7

Katraj Snake Park, Pune

Part of the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, this place has a pretty impressive snake lineup, including the Indian rock python, king cobra, and Russell’s viper. A 13 ft long King Cobra is the prime attraction of this place. Also, which really makes it hiss-terical (in a good way) are the fun fact boards and interactive sessions for kids and adults alike. Did you know snakes don’t have eyelids? You will now.

6/7

Bannerghatta Snake Park, Karnataka

Tucked inside the Bannerghatta Biological Park, this lesser-known gem has an impressive serpentarium and well-maintained glass enclosures. It’s not just about snakes either, you'll find other reptiles living their best slithery lives. The bonus? It’s set in a lush green environment, perfect for a weekend reptile rendezvous.

7/7

Calcutta Snake Park, Kolkata

Founded in 1977 by acclaimed herpetologist Mr. Dipak Mitra, Calcutta Snake Park proudly stands as Eastern India’s first dedicated snake park. Spread over 2 acres, this unique space is focused on the conservation and education of all things slithery. Visitors can get up close with rare snake species and popular varieties, along with an exciting mix of birds, crocodiles, and lizards. Highlights include the striking Yellow Monitor Lizard and the elusive Smooth Green Snake, making it a must-visit for wildlife lovers and curious minds alike of all ages.
