5 sacred Jyotirlingas in India every Lord Shiva bhakt must visit at least once

For every Shiva bhakt, the twelve Jyotirlingas are the ultimate spiritual bucket list. These divine shrines represent the radiant manifestation of Shiva as an infinite column of light. While each one has its own legend and vibe, a visit to any of this place is nevertheless complemented with mystic charm, jaw-dropping locations, and one that you won' forget ever. If you have also been planning to visit a jyotirlinga for a long time, here are five places that you can start with.

2/6

Somnath Jyotirlinga, Gujarat

The Somnath temple in Gujarat is believed to be the first and most sacred of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Steeped in mythology, it’s said to have been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, over the centuries. Till date, it stands as a symbol of resilience and unwavering faith. Set against the backdrop of the Arabian Sea, the temple offers a divine experience that transcends time.

3/6

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Madhya Pradesh

Located in Ujjain, Mahakaleshwar is unique because it is the only Dakshinamukhi (south-facing) Jyotirlinga. Here, Lord Shiva is worshipped as Mahakaal — the destroyer of time. The temple’s famed Bhasma Aarti, performed at dawn with sacred ash, is one of those rituals that draws pilgrims from across the globe. This is not just a visit, it’s a mystical experience where one feels both humbled and elevated in the same breath.

4/6

Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga, Uttar Pradesh

Set on the ghats of the sacred Ganga River in Varanasi, Kashi Vishwanath is perhaps the most well-known Jyotirlinga. As per the legend, Varanasi is the city Lord Shiva never leaves, making this temple a core of his cosmic energy. Amid the bustling alleys and chants, the temple stands as a beacon of unwavering devotion. People believe that a darshan here washes away lifetimes of karma. Combine it with an early-morning boat ride on the Ganges, and your soul might just feel a bit lighter.

5/6

Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, Maharashtra

Nestled in the Brahmagiri hills of Nashik, Trimbakeshwar is also the origin of the holy Godavari River. This temple is distinct because the Shiva Linga here has three faces, symbolising Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. It's an architectural wonder with a black stone exterior and intricately carved details. The surrounding hills and waterfalls make it an ideal destination for spiritual seekers who want a blend of natural beauty and divine energy.

6/6

Kedarnath Jyotirlinga, Uttarakhand

Perched at an altitude of 11,755 ft in the snow-clad Himalayas, Kedarnath is one of the most challenging Jyotirlingas to reach, but also the most rewarding. Accessible only during a few months of the year due to extreme weather, the journey to Kedarnath tests both your body and soul. Legend says that Lord Shiva manifested here in the form of a bull to elude the Pandavas. With the Mandakini River flowing nearby and towering peaks all around, the setting is nothing short of divine.
