5 places in Rajasthan that aren’t desert

5 places in Rajasthan that aren’t desert

Rajasthan. Just the name conjures up images of endless sand dunes, mustached men in colorful turbans, camels doing camel things, and the sun frying you like you see in the movies. But here is a plot twist: Rajasthan is not all desert. In fact, the state has some of the beautiful, and shockingly un-sandy, lush, and delightfully non-dune-y spots that will make you go, “Wait, this is Rajasthan?!”
So, hold on to your travel plans, and explore these 5 places in Rajasthan that aren’t desert. At all.

2/6

Mount Abu

Welcome to Mount Abu, the state's one and only hill station. Yes, you read that right — hill station. With pine forests, cool breezes, and actual clouds, it feels like the entire state took a chill pill and grew some trees. Nakki Lake is perfect for lazy boating, while the Dilwara Temples have marble carvings so intricate they might just make your jaw drop off. Bonus: It’s the only place in Rajasthan where you might need a sweater. In May.

3/6

Udaipur

Nicknamed the City of Lakes, Udaipur feels like Rajasthan’s romantic, artsy cousin. With its enchanting lakes—Pichola, Fatehsagar, and Swaroop Sagar—and palaces that seem to float (yes, really!), Udaipur gives off more Venice vibes than Thar Desert vibes. Enjoy a cup of masala chai at a rooftop café and indulge your inner royalty.

4/6

Keoladeo National Park

Formerly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the only thing hotter than the temperature is the birdwatching scene. Over 370 species of birds hang out here, including migratory visitors from Siberia. That’s right — birds are literally flying from freezing Russia to this green wetland in Rajasthan. If that doesn’t impress you, nothing will.

5/6

Banswara

Known as the City of Hundred Islands (yep, you read that right—Rajasthan has islands!), Banswara turns into a full-blown monsoon marvel. Tucked away in the state’s southern tip, it sheds its desert vibes and slips into something greener when the rains arrive. Think rivers, waterfalls, and dense forests—Banswara is basically Rajasthan on a jungle vacation.

6/6

Alwar

Alwar has Sariska Tiger Reserve (complete with actual tigers), the haunted Bhangarh Fort (for your spooky Instagram needs), and Siliserh Lake (perfect for picnics and pretending you're in a Bollywood movie). The best part? Sand is barely there to disturb or surprise you.
So the next time someone says Rajasthan is all sand and sunshine, enlighten them with the facts. Beyond the dunes lie misty hills, lush forests, shimmering lakes, and bird-laden wetlands. Yes, there’s desert, but there’s also so much more. All you need is how keen you are to go beyond the usual, and explore the off-beat.
