It’s almost March, that time of year when the beauty of spring is all around you. You find yourself wondering if you could see snow one more time before the summer’s heat sets in. If this is you, good news, there are some places in India where it still snows in March. In the higher reaches of the Himalayas, particularly above 2,500 to 3,000 metres, winter continues to hold its ground. Snow remains on slopes, mountain passes, meadows and even village rooftops in several destinations. However, fresh snowfall may be less frequent toward late March, and substantial snow cover is still common in high-altitude regions.

At an elevation of approximately 2,650 metres in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, Gulmarg is one of India’s most dependable snow destinations in March. The town transforms into a winter sports hub between December and March, with snow typically lingering well into early spring. The Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, carries visitors up to Apharwat Peak at nearly 3,980 metres. At this altitude, snow remains thick through most of March and sometimes even into April, depending on seasonal conditions.

Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh lies at an average elevation of about 3,800 metres, making it one of the highest inhabited regions in India. March is still a deep winter here. Temperatures frequently remain below freezing, especially at night, and snow blankets villages such as Kaza, Kibber, Langza and Hikkim. Spiti is a cold desert mountain valley, and durig heavy snowfall in winters, it remains an isolated region for months. The Manali–Kaza route via Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass remains closed in March due to snow accumulation. Access is typically possible only via the Shimla–Kinnaur route, and even that depends on road conditions.

Manali sits at around 2,050 metres in the Kullu Valley. By March, snow in Manali town itself may begin to thin out, especially toward the end of the month. However, nearby higher-altitude areas continue to retain snow cover. Solang Valley, located approximately 13 km from Manali at about 2,560 metres, typically has snow in early March. It is a popular spot for snow activities such as skiing, snow tubing and snowmobiling. The amount of snow decreases as the month progresses, but early March usually offers reliable snow.

Auli, located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at elevations between 2,800 and 3,050 metres, is one of India’s best-known ski resorts. Snowfall typically begins in December and continues through February, with snow cover often lasting into March. The slopes of Auli are specially developed for skiing, and the region hosts winter sports events depending on snow conditions. Even when fresh snowfall reduces by mid-March, accumulated snow on the slopes often remains suitable for skiing and snow viewing.

Yumthang Valley in North Sikkim lies at an altitude of about 3,564 metres. Known as the “Valley of Flowers” during spring, it remains snow-covered in early March before the rhododendron bloom begins in April. The valley is located beyond Lachung and requires permits for Indian travellers. In March, snow commonly blankets the meadows and mountain slopes. Temperatures remain low, especially in the mornings and evenings. Nearby Yumesamdong (also known as Zero Point), located at an even higher altitude of around 4,600 metres, typically has heavier and more consistent snow cover in March.
