It’s the first snowfall of the year 2026 and travellers across India are happy with this winter spell after a long time. Given a powerful Western Disturbance, the Himalayan regions are experiencing heavy and intense snowfall to northern India. As per India Meteorological Department (IMD), snow will continue in higher elevations in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir

Gulmarg, the snow capital of India, is buried under thick snow as of now. Travellers are overjoyed with the white beauty and dramatic wintry scenes making it a paradise for photographers. This is already the peak snow season. People visit here to enjoy skiing and snowboarding, among others.

What to know before:

Roads may be disrupted because of snow and wind

Carry heavy winter gear and waterproof boots

Acclimatise as altitude sickness can affect some travellers

Manali and surrounding regions, Himachal Pradesh

A number of tourists in Manali right now are sharing beautiful and dreamy pictures and videos of heavy snowfall that has hit Manali and higher parts. A number of prime roads across the state remain closed. But the views are incredible. Manali is experiencing such beautiful and heavy snow after many years.

What to know before:

If you are headed towards Manali, expect road blockages and traffic

Shimla & Narkanda, Himachal Pradesh

Shimla, the beautiful capital of Himachal Pradesh, is also witnessing heavy snow after a long dry spell. Tourists are extremely happy with the “Paisa Vasool” views. Sheena Mehta, an ardent snow lover from Delhi, who is currently in Shimla, called it “her dream come true kind of moment”. It is incredible here what we are experiencing, unbelievable! I feel so lucky”. Social media posts are flooded with snowfall pictures from Shimla and Narkanda.

Mussoorie, Auli and other high-altitude regions in Uttarakhand

It is the first snow of 2026 in northern Uttarakhand after ages. Auli, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Mussoorie, Chakrata, and Munsiyari are all covered in thick snow. These are iconic hill destinations combining spirituality, adventure and scenic beauty.

What to know before:

Some roads may be blocked

Carry heavy winter clothing and gear

Emergency services might be slower

Leh-Ladakh region

Leh-Ladakh and the Zanskar region are also covered in deep snow. Ice has transformed this cold desert into a winter wonderland. This place is only for serious winter travellers and adventure seekers. The iconic Chadar Trek route on the frozen Zanskar River is perfect for trekkers.

What to know before:

Temperatures can plunge to −20°C or lower

Chadar Trek is only for experienced trekkers with guides
