5 most beautiful hill station lakes in India that are worth all the hype

If you are a mountain person, you don’t need convincing to plan a trip to one. The misty mountains, winding roads, and cool breeze are all that we seek and why we find ourselves going back to the hill stations again and again. Apart from the ambience, weather, and other factors like the cable cars, toy trains and more, some of them are hiding liquid treasures, shimmering lakes that make the scenery a dreamy affair.

Hill beauties

Forget rushing streams and raging waterfalls; these calm, reflective waters offer the kind of bliss that we don’t get in cities. bring a whole new personality to the hills. From boating to lakeside strolls and mirror-like mountain reflections, here are five hill stations in India, where the lakes, quite literally, steal the show.

3/7

Mount Abu, Rajasthan – Nakki Lake

Rajasthan and “lake” might make you think of Udaipur, but Mount Abu, which is the state’s only hill station, has its very own lake, Nakki Lake, to boast. Legend says the lake was dug by gods using their nails (“nakh” = nails, hence “Nakki”). But myth or not, this little waterbody sits surrounded by hills and quirky rock formations, making it an unusual blend of cool breezes and desert vibes. Add to it kitschy paddle boats shaped like swans and a buzzing lakeside market, and Nakki Lake is like that one place from where you wouldn't want to come back.

4/7

Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu – Kodaikanal Lake

Locals just call it “Kodai Lake,” but this star-shaped beauty in the Palani Hills is the ultimate picnic spot. Kodaikanal Lake is man-made, but feels like it has been part of the hills forever. You can cycle around its 5 km perimeter, try horseback riding, or just chill with roasted corn by the shore. If you’re lucky, mist will sweep in and cover the lake in a dreamy veil, making you feel like you are in a dream. Pro tip: rent a cycle with a little basket in front—it’s the perfect Instagram prop.

5/7

Nainital, Uttarakhand – Naini Lake

Nainital wouldn’t even be “Nainital” without its lake. Shaped like a pear and glowing in shades of green and blue, Naini Lake is the life, heart, and social hub of this Kumaoni hill station. Whether you’re rowing across its still waters, gliding in a pedal boat, or just taking a lazy walk along The Mall Road with piping hot momos in hand, the lake keeps you hooked. In the evenings, as the twinkling lights of the town reflect on its surface, the vibe is almost magical. Honestly, Naini Lake doesn't need to scream for the spotlight.

6/7

Shillong, Meghalaya – Ward’s Lake

If you thought all hill station lakes look the same, Shillong’s Ward’s Lake will make you pause. Small but ridiculously pretty, it’s fringed with manicured gardens and walking paths, giving it the elegance of an English countryside postcard. Locals love it for romantic strolls, while tourists head straight for the bridge that cuts across the water, a great spot to watch the fish and snap that must-have photo. Ward’s Lake isn’t about grandeur; it’s about quiet charm. It’s subtle, graceful, but unforgettable in every visit.

7/7

Ooty, Tamil Nadu – Ooty Lake

The Nilgiris’ poster child, Ooty Lake, has been entertaining visitors since the 1820s. With eucalyptus trees lining its banks and mist rolling off the hills, it’s the kind of lake that looks straight out of a postcard. Here, you can rent rowboats, paddleboats, or speedboats if you want a little bit of drama. The nearby pony rides and food stalls selling piping hot bhajjis (pakoras) seal the deal. Touristy? Absolutely. But sometimes touristy is exactly what your travel soul needs the most after all.
