5 historic gurudwaras in Punjab that every traveller should visit

Punjab is home to some of the most significant historic gurudwaras and embodies the rich spiritual heritage and the difficult journey of Sikhism. One of the five takhts of the Sikhs, located in Anandpur Sahib in Rupnagar district of Punjab. This gurudwara was built by Guru Gobind Singh here for the defence of Sikhs and is also the place where the last two Sikh Gurus, Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh, lived. This temple is also surrounded by five other forts named Anandgarh, Lohgarh, Holgarh, Taragarh, and Fatehgarh to protect the Sikh community. An architectural marvel which is made of white marble and has gold domes, visitors can also see the important relics of the Gurus here too.

A gurudwara that is a prominent spiritual site of Sikhism, also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib. It is located in Amritsar of Punjab and is also considered one of the holiest sites for Sikhs. The temple is built around a holy pool called Sarovar, which was completed by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das. The Golden Temple has a very unique architecture with a square plan and four entrances and a circumambulation path around the pool. The four entrances of this temple depict that people from all walks of life and faiths are welcome here. The building is pure beauty with the sanctum’s dome and upper area of the temple covered in gold leaf, while it is made from marble and copper. Visitors should definitely assist in the langar made here for a more immersive experience.

One of the most revered gurudwaras in Patiala district, known for its healing powers and considered a place that offers solace to people suffering from mental and physical ailments. Legends suggest that the ninth guru of the Sikhs, Guru Tegh Bahadur, was asked to visit this village by a man to come and bless the village so that they get rid of a mysterious and long-time sickness going around since ages. When the Guru visited and sat under a Banyan tree, it is considered that the sickness subsided, and this is how the site came to be known as Dukh Nivaran, eradicator of suffering. The gurudwara has a sacred sarovar and holds great spiritual and cultural significance.

A Sikh gurudwara located in the city of Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab and constructed to honour the martyrdom of the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh who were bricked up here alive, and the name of the site is also after the youngest boy killed. The complex contains several shrines including Gurudwara Bhora Sahib, Gurudwara Burj Mata Gujri, and Gurudwara Shahid Ganj along with a Diwan Todar Mal Hall and a Sarovar. Visitors should come here to seek blessings during the month of December to also experience the historic Shaheedi Jor Mela held here each year during December.

Housing the largest Sarovar of all the gurudwaras, this religious site was established by the fifth guru, Guru Arjan Dev, and is located in the city of Tarn Taran Sahib in Punjab. This is a prominent spiritual center for Sikhs and also holds great historical importance. The gurudwara is a big complex which is plated in gold, and marble is inlaid here. This gurudwara is mainly famous for the monthly gathering of pilgrims here on the day of Amavas.
