2026, the ‘Year of the Sun’: 6 powerful Sun temples to visit in India

We have officially entered 2026 which is also being called the ‘Year of the Sun’. This now has become the year to chase the Sun and visit the powerful Sun temples across India. These ancient shrines attract travellers not just for their architectural beauty but also for their cultural symbolism. Sun temples are dedicated to the solar deity and are extremely powerful and rare.

As India embraces 2026 as a symbolic Year of the Sun, these six temples call every history lover, photographer and or pilgrim seekers. On this note, let’s have a look at seven powerful Sun temples you must visit in India in 2026.

2/7

Konark Sun Temple — Odisha

There is no doubt that Konark Sun Temple is among the most iconic shrines dedicated to the Sun in India. The temple, a UNESCO Heritage Site, belongs to the 13th-century and is an architectural wonder. The temple was built by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty and looks like a colossal stone chariot with 24 wheels and seven horses. It represents the passage of time and celestial forces. This is one temple which people from across the world visit at least once in their lifetime. Sunrise and sunsets are absolutely magical!

3/7

Modhera Sun Temple — Gujarat

Another must visit Sun Temple in India is in Modhera which was constructed in 1026 CE by King Bhima I of the Solanki dynasty. Set on the banks of the Pushpavati River, it is among India’s most stunning sun temples. The best part about the temple is that it was constructed in such a manner that the first rays of morning sun illuminate the sanctum on the equinox. Today, the temple attracts people from across the globe.

4/7

Arasavalli Sun Temple — Andhra Pradesh

Arasavalli Sun Temple is among the oldest surviving sun temples in India. Situated in Srikakulam district, the temple dates back to the 7th century CE under King Devendra Varma. The temple is known for a unique solar alignment twice a year. During specific periods surrounding Uttarayana and Dakshinayana, the first rays of sun enter the temple complex and fall directly on the feet of the Surya idol.

5/7

Suryanar Kovil — Tamil Nadu

Suryanar Kovil is located in the heart of Tamil Nadu’s Cauvery delta close to Kumbakonam. It is a historic Navagraha temple that places Surya at its center. The temple was built in the Chola period (11th century) and is unique in several ways. It is also a fine example of Chola architecture. A must visit in 2026.

6/7

Biranchi Narayan Sun Temple — Buguda, Odisha

Also known as the “Wooden Konark”, the Biranchi Narayan Sun Temple in Buguda is Odisha’s second major sun temple. Unlike the east-facing Konark, Biranchi Narayan faces west. The rays of the setting sun’s rays illuminate the deity’s feet each evening. There are 46 intricately carved wood pillars which show the fine artistry.

7/7

Surya Temple, Ranchi — Jharkhand

Surya Temple of Ranchi is more modern than other temples. It was built on top of a hill close to Bundu in the early 1990s. Unlike ancient ruins and medieval stone art, this temple depicts the sun god on a chariot with 18 wheels and seven horses, inviting devotees and tourists alike into an immersive experience of Surya worship.
