10 countries with the highest number of vegetarians

Vegetarianism has ceased to be a peculiar food habit and has instead become a lifestyle trend embraced and practiced by people from different cultures and backgrounds all over the world. Based on the compilation of statistics from World Population Review, there are countries noted to have a substantial number of people following a vegetarian diet. These countries come from different traditions and beliefs, from ancient to modern societies embracing health and sustainable trends.
Here’s a look at the 10 countries with the highest percentage of vegetarians globally.

2/11

India - 29.5%

India tops the list, with close to one-third of its population following a vegetarian diet. This preference is deeply rooted in religious and philosophical traditions, particularly within Hinduism, Jainism, and certain Buddhist sects, where the principle of non-violence extends to animals as well. India’s rich culinary heritage supports this way of eating, offering an extraordinary variety of plant-based dishes, from dals and vegetable preparations to fermented foods and dairy-based staples, making vegetarianism both widespread and sustainable.

3/11

Mexico - 19%

It comes in second place, as vegetarianism is steadily gaining popularity within a cuisine that has traditionally been heavily meat-based. Although meat remains a central element in many classic Mexican dishes, the cuisine has always been rooted in staples like beans, corn, vegetables, squash, and chilies, which naturally lend themselves to a wide range of vegetarian recipes. Increasing awareness of health issues and ethical considerations is further fueling the growing shift toward plant-based and vegetarian food choices.

4/11

Brazil - 14%

Vegetarian diets have recently gained prominence in Brazil, especially among city dwellers and the younger generation. Even though Brazil is known as a country with numerous meat-based foods like churrasco, the trend of vegetarian diets has been gaining much prominence, thanks to various factors, such as healthy living, taking care of animals, and being environment-friendly. Brazil already consumes many fruits, beans, rice, and veggies, so the adoption of vegetarianism is not an uphill task.

5/11

Taiwan – 13.5%

Vegetarians in Taiwan are large in number, associated closely with Buddhism, which promotes a diet without meat. Taiwan also boasts a renowned vegetarian cuisine culture, with plenty of vegetarian eateries and street foods found in Taiwan’s major towns. Vegetarian foods in Taiwan are mostly prepared from soybean proteins, mushrooms, and vegetables, which come with flavours and textures non-vegetarians can also enjoy.

6/11

Israel - 13%

Israel ranks among the friendliest countries in the world for vegetarians and vegans. Several reasons are responsible for the increased following for the plant-based diets in the country. Many cuisines from Israel consist of vegetarian foods such as hummus, salads, and mezze. Falafel and hummus consist of vegetarian diets. Many Israelis have adopted the diet as a result of health benefits.

7/11

Australia – 12.1%

Australia’s vegetarian community exemplifies how lifestyle choices, especially by young people, contribute towards shifts in consumer behavior. Health issues, climate change, and welfare of animals have raised awareness, making Australians opt for a healthy, green, or flexitarian diet. Australia’s culinary culture, shaped by international cuisines, also ensures easy access to healthy vegetarian choices at cafes, restaurants, as well as grocery stores.

8/11

Argentina - 12%

Argentina, famous for its beef-based diet, comes across as an unlikely contender for this list; however, vegetarianism has been on the rise, particularly in major cities. With increased consciousness regarding health and ethics, more and more people are switching to veggie diets, and veggie food alternatives have begun to make their presence felt in Argentina.

9/11

Sweden - 12%

The vegetarian community in Sweden correlates well with the high priority the nation gives to the concept of sustainability. Vegetarian diets are often recommended as a means of cutting carbon emissions, with vegetarian options being offered at most institutions. Vegetarian versions of various traditional foods have been adopted by the cuisine of Sweden.

10/11

Finland - 12%

Finland experiences a similar movement with its neighbor, Sweden, where the rise of vegetarianism has occurred due to health and environmental reasons. Public food policies promote the reduction of meat intake, and mealtimes feature increased acceptance of vegetarian cuisine. Finnish cuisine has adopted more vegetation-based meals without losing its original flavors.

11/11

Austria - 11%

Rounding out the list is Austria with a substantial vegetarian population. Although Austrian dishes are typically meat-focused, contemporary food trends have influenced a move away from eating meat with a resultant emphasis on vegetarian diets. Vegetarian diets are therefore a regular component of the changing food culture landscape within the country.
