A male jaguar in Brazil has set a new record for the longest documented swim by a member of its species, covering a distance of up to 2.48 kilometers (1.54 miles). As per the Live Science, this has raised concerns with regard to the animal’s behaviours. This remarkable feat occurred near the Serra da Mesa Hydroelectric Power Dam in Goiás state. Previously, the longest known swim for a jaguar was approximately 200 m (656 ft). This new record shatters that by more than six times.

World’s 10 most expensive air travel destinationsThe jaguar's journey was first captured on camera in May 2020, when it was photographed near the dam. In August 2024, the same individual was photographed again on an island in the dam's reservoir. Scientists identified the jaguar by matching its unique coat patterns, confirming it was the same animal. The distance between the mainland and the island is approximately 1.27 kilometers, but researchers considered two possible scenarios for the jaguar's swim:
The jaguar swam directly from the mainland to the island, covering the full 2.48 kilometers in a single journey. The jaguar swam to a small islet approximately 1.07 kilometers away, then re-entered the water to swim the remaining distance to the island.
Even if the swim was undertaken over two journeys, it still represents a record-breaking distance for jaguars. Researchers speculate that the jaguar's motivation for such an extensive swim could be related to territory exploration or seeking a mate, rather than a lack of food. This behaviour suggests that jaguars may be more capable of long-distance swimming than previously thought.

Understanding their swimming capabilities can inform strategies to protect and connect fragmented habitats, ensuring the survival of this iconic species.
This record-breaking swim by a Brazilian jaguar not only highlights the species' remarkable adaptability and strength but also underscores the importance of preserving their natural habitats to support such extraordinary behaviours.
