Best of Maharashtra's national parks and tiger reserves for this wildlife season

When October arrives and the monsoon mist clears, Maharashtra’s forests reopen in their full glory - lush, teeming, and alive with wildlife. The state is home to some of India’s most biodiverse tiger reserves and national parks, offering unforgettable encounters with nature. Maharashtra’s wildlife season generally runs from October to June, with each phase offering a different experience. Post-monsoon months (October–December) offer lush greenery and active birdlife.
Safaris are conducted twice daily - early morning and late afternoon, and advance booking through official forest department portals is recommended, especially for popular reserves like Tadoba and Pench. Here are the best national parks and tiger reserves in Maharashtra to explore this wildlife season.

2/7

Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve

If there’s one place in Maharashtra synonymous with tiger sightings, it’s Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, the state’s oldest and largest national park. Tadoba is spread across Chandrapur district, and is often called “The Land of Tigers” for good reason, it boasts one of the highest tiger densities in India. Beyond tigers, Tadoba is also home to leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, gaur, and over 200 species of birds.

3/7

Pench Tiger Reserve

Straddling the border of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, Pench Tiger Reserve is best known as the real-life inspiration behind Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. The reserve is home to a healthy population of tigers, leopards, wild boars, and plenty of chital deer. The Maharashtra side of Pench offers a quieter, less-crowded safari experience compared to the Madhya Pradesh zones.

4/7

Melghat Tiger Reserve

Melghat is located in the Satpura ranges of Amravati district, and is one of the earliest sanctuaries declared under India’s Project Tiger. “Melghat” translates to “meeting of the ghats,” and that’s exactly what the rugged hills and deep valleys in the region are all about. They come together to form this incredible zone with rich biodiversity. The reserve’s landscape of teak forests and grasslands provides a natural haven for tigers, leopards, sloth bears, sambar deer, and rare birds like the forest owlet. To spot one of these incredibly rare owls is a treat every birder waits for.

5/7

Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve

A blend of two rich ecosystems, Navegaon and Nagzira, this reserve in Gondia district is one of Maharashtra’s most scenic tiger reserves. The reserve is dotted with lakes, bamboo thickets, and dense forests, and supports a wide range of wildlife, including tigers, leopards, wild dogs, and over 300 bird species. Nagzira is perfect for classic jeep safaris through tiger country.

6/7

Sahyadri Tiger Reserve

The reserve is formed by combining the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and Chandoli National Park. The Sahyadri Tiger Reserve lies in the picturesque Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is defined by misty hills, evergreen forests, and cascading waterfalls. Don’t be surprised, but tiger sightings are quite rare here, but the reserve is also home to leopards, Indian giant squirrels, sambar deer, and several endemic species of birds and butterflies.

7/7

Bor Tiger Reserve

Don’t let its size fool you, Bor Tiger Reserve, located near Wardha, is one of Maharashtra’s emerging wildlife hotspots. It was declared a tiger reserve in 2014, Bor acts as a crucial corridor between Tadoba and Pench. Bor Tiger Reserve is also the smallest tiger reserve in India. The forest is home to tigers, leopards, nilgai, wild boars, and an impressive variety of birds.
