10 most stunning national birds from around the world

National birds are a powerful symbol of identity, pride, and natural heritage. These birds have been chosen after careful consideration to reflect the spirit of the nation, the landscape, and the cultural heritage of the people. These birds symbolise qualities such as freedom, resilience, beauty, and strength. Some of these birds are revered in folklore and mythology, while others are featured on national flags and emblems.
Here’s a closer look at ten of the most stunning national birds from around the world.

2/11

Indian peafowl — India

Declared India’s national bird in 1963, the Indian peafowl is arguably one of the most recognisable birds on the planet. The male, known for its dazzling iridescent blue neck and dramatic train of elongated upper tail feathers, performs one of nature’s most elaborate courtship displays. When spread out, the glimmering feathers display eye-like designs that seem almost hypnotic in the sun’s rays. Apart from its aesthetic value, the peafowl has significant cultural and religious meaning in India, often featured in mythology, temple art, and classical literature.

3/11

Bald eagle — United States

Named as a symbol of the country in 1782, the bald eagle symbolises power, bravery, and freedom. The bird’s striking white head and tail feathers provide a strong contrast to its dark brown body, making it easily recognisable. With a wingspan that can stretch over 2.2 meters (7 feet), it is one of the most powerful birds of prey in North America. And to see one flying high in the sky or swooping in for a meal of fish, is just forgettable. The bald eagle was once on a path to extinction, but due to strict conservation measures, the bird population recovered remarkably. Today, the bird serves as a symbol of modern-day success in environmental protection.

4/11

Resplendent quetzal — Guatemala

The resplendent quetzal has been widely cited as one of the most beautiful birds in the Americas. Males boast shimmering emerald-green plumage, a crimson breast and extraordinarily long tail feathers that can grow longer than their body during breeding season. Sacred to ancient Mayan and Aztec civilisations, the bird symbolised freedom and wealth. Its image is so central to Guatemalan identity that the country’s currency is named after it.

5/11

Scarlet macaw — Honduras

With vivid red feathers accented by bright yellow and cobalt blue wings, the scarlet macaw looks almost painted by hand. Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, this parrot is recognised for its intelligence, social nature, and loud, resonant cries. Its stunning colours and charming personality have made it a celebrated national symbol and a symbol of conservation.

6/11

Golden eagle – Mexico

The golden eagle is prominently displayed on the national flag of Mexico, depicted sitting on a cactus with a serpent in its beak. This symbol is deeply rooted in Aztec mythology. In fact, the golden eagle is one of the most dangerous birds of prey in the Northern Hemisphere, recognised for its speed, agility, and acute eyesight. Its golden-brown feathers are particularly radiant in sunlight, especially around its neck, thus giving it the name of a golden eagle.

7/11

Himalayan monal — Nepal

The national bird of Nepal, the Himalayan monal, has a nearly iridescent quality in the sunlight of high altitudes. The male bird shows metallic hues of green, blue, copper, purple, and gold in its feathers, so that the colours appear to shift constantly. This pheasant is found in the Himalayan forests, usually above 2,500 meters, in the Himalayas, where it flourishes in the mountainous terrain and is prized for its brilliant natural luster.

8/11

Atlantic puffin – Iceland

The Atlantic puffin is a small but colourful bird, and is famous for its "clown-like" appearance. During breeding season, its beak becomes brightly coloured in shades of orange, yellow and blue, contrasting with its black-and-white body. Often called the “sea parrot,” this seabird nests in dramatic coastal cliffs and is a major draw for wildlife enthusiasts visiting Iceland.

9/11

Grey crowned crane — Uganda

The grey crowned crane stands out with its elegant stature and distinctive golden crown of stiff, spiky feathers. Its slate grey body, white wings, and bright red throat pouch make it even more majestic. The elegant grey crowned crane is featured on the national flag and coat of arms of Uganda.

10/11

Andean condor - Colombia

The Andean condor is one of the largest flying birds in the world, and is a sight to behold with its massive wingspan, which can stretch over 3 meters. The sight of its black skin, white neck ruff, and bald head is simply unforgettable. The Andean condor soars above the Andes Mountains, and represents power, endurance, and freedom.

11/11

North Island brown kiwi — New Zealand

The kiwi is unlike any other national bird on this list. It is flightless, nocturnal, with hair-like feathers, powerful legs, and a long beak, which it uses to search for insects in the soil of the forests. Although it is not impressive, the kiwi is an important part of the identity of New Zealand, to the point that “Kiwi” is a colloquial term for the people of New Zealand.
