Famous Dutch painters

Dutch artists, or basically artists from the Netherlands, have been huge contributors to the art world. In fact, the Dutch Golden Age was one of the brightest times in the history of arts. From the swirling patterns and techniques to the group portraits of smiling people having a jolly time, there was a Dutch artist who had expertise in it all.
Here we mention 5 Dutch artists who are famous around the globe.

2/6

Vincent van Gogh

The list of famous Dutch artists cannot start without mentioning Vincent van Gogh. He is one of the most famous Dutch artist and deserves all the praise and love that he is now getting. He is know for his use of colours, his swirls and patterns, and also because of his time in a mental asylum.

Van Gogh’s early work, like ‘The Potato Eaters’ had dark, bold colours, and had the shadow effects all over, whereas his later works of portraits and landscapes were bright, beautiful, and simple awe-inspiring.

Rembrandt van Rijn

Rembrandt van Rijn, usually just referred to as Rembrandt is another great Dutch painter, and a star of the Dutch Golden age. Rembrandt is particularly known for his chiaroscuro technique, the play of light and shadow, and how he gave his paintings a certain touch of life and movement with it.
One of his most famous works, ‘The Night Watch’, is the perfect example of his chiaroscuro skill, and has the perfect play of light and shadow on the characters.

4/6

Johannes Vermeer

Johannes Vermeer is also a famous Dutch Golden Age artist, and is known for his beautiful, detailed paintings. In fact, one of his paintings ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ is said to be the ‘Mona Lisa of the North’!
Vermeer was exceptional when it came to adding a sense of natural light to his paintings. Be it the light that appeared to be a sudden flash in ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’, or natural light that seemed to come out of windows in ‘The Milkmaid’.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Pieter Bruegel the Elder is another famous Dutch artist, but also pretty underrated in art circles. Some of his most famous paintings are - ‘The Hunters in the Snow’ and ‘The Peasant Wedding’. Frans Hals

Another famous Dutch painter, who shined through the Golden age is Frans Hals. He was known for his lively portraits, and the natural feel that his paintings had.
Frans Hals was not really a landscape painter, and his love lay in painting portraits and people. And even his portraits were not people standing or sitting at a place waiting to be framed on a canvas, they were natural, candid, and bursting with joy. Hals’s characters were full of life and energy, and that is what made him distinct from others.
