Edwin Lord Weeks

Edwin Lord Weeks was a gifted painter with remarkable skills. He had the ability to show beautiful scenes of distant land to his fellows in the West and he did a pretty good job at it. His artworks are still praised for their detailed beauty, especially in capturing the essence of rural settings. Through the use of vibrant colours, Weeks perfectly recreated bustling marketplaces, calm landscapes and architectural wonders, transporting viewers to these far-off places. His attention to cultural details and daily life brought depth to his paintings.

‘Along the Ghats’

‘Along the Ghats’ by Weeks shows the vibrant riverbanks of the Ganga river in India. Weeks beautifully captured the hustle and bustle along the river, depicting a scene filled with colours and activities. The riverbank is glowing with life, showcasing people sitting peacefully near the river, doing their daily chores and some performing religious rituals. The artist has used brilliant colours to show the Ghat and the people with boats in the river and free birds in the sky.

‘The Golden Temple’

This is perhaps one of Weeks’ most renowned works and also the most beautiful one. The painting shows the beautiful Sikh shrine in Amritsar, Punjab, ‘The Golden Temple’. The painting exudes a sense of peace and calm and shows the Golden Temple in all its glory. Weeks has skillfully captured the architectural details of the temple and the bright golden colour it adorns. The reflection in the water also adds depth and magnificence to the painting.

‘The Last Voyage’

In his painting ‘The Last Voyage’ Weeks shows a beautiful and emotional picture of the Ghats of Banaras. The painting shows a weak, fragile man being carried on a boat to the other side of the Ghat in a very ‘Indian’ setting. The painting is a blend of emotions, with a calm, slow background which gives the painting a divine feel and along with that a dying man in the same frame. The use of light colours and soft tones in the sky and landscape gives the painting a beautiful touch and the detailing in the boat, sky and monuments is also heavenly.

‘Lake at Oodeypore’

‘Lake at Oodeypore’ shows an amazing view of the Udaipur Lake on canvas. Edwin Weeks aptly captured the peace and calm of the scene with the bright, silent waters and the grand monuments and buildings surrounding it. The artist used soft coloured and pastel hues to show the beauty of Udaipur and the lush greenery that surrounds the place. The painting has a beautiful play of light and shadow and the realism in the painting invites more and more people towards it.

‘A Wedding Procession’

This painting by Weeks shows a beautiful scene of an Indian wedding with horses and people and a ‘Paalki’. Weeks skillfully shows a procession filled with people wearing colourful clothes and cows decorated with beautiful ornaments. There are musicians, dancers and people wearing red. The painting shows great energy through the alleys of Indian towns and Weeks has been able to beautifully portray a traditional Indian wedding scene.
