David is probably one of Michelnangelo’s most famous and iconic sculptures. It shows his mastery in not just creation but also replication of human anatomy.

David, the one whose statue it is, is a Biblical hero who defeated the giant Goliath. David’s pose is relaxed yet alert, and his weight shifted onto one leg. One of his hands is near his face and his eyebrows furrowed together in tension.

The Pieta is another of Michelangelo’s most famous works. It is kept in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, and shows the Virgin Mary holding the lifeless body of her son, Jesus Christ, after his crucifixion. This particular sculpture is absolutely beautiful and the story behind it is both moving and emotional.

The way Michelanrglo has sculpted Mary, her robe, her headgear, and Jesus’s body, it is all so life-like and raw that it seems as if they are two real humans covered in some kind of magic.

Bacchus was created around 1496-1497, and is famous as one of Michelangelo’s earliest works. This is said to be the sculpture of the Roman god of wine. Unlike many of Michelangelo’s later works, which have idealised forms and intense emotion, Bacchus has a playful and somewhat mischievous quality. The sculpture shows him in a slightly tipsy state, with a bowl-like object in his hand, close to his face.

Moses, the man who was the epitome of power and authority, gives off the same energy from his sculpture by Michelangelo. It is part of the tomb of Pope Julius II, and is considered one of Michelangelo’s greatest masterpieces. Moses is shows as a powerful, majestic figure, seated with the Ten Commandments under his arm. The expression on Moses’ face conveys a sense of intense anger and determination. His furrowed brow, piercing eyes, and flowing beard give the figure an almost divine presence.

The Deposition is one of Michelangelo’s later works, created between 1547 and 1555. This sculpture is famous for its emotional intensity and the personal connection Michelangelo had with the piece. The Deposition shows the moment when Christ’s body is taken down from the cross, with Nicodemus, Mary Magdalene, and the Virgin Mary supporting his lifeless form.
Unlike the peaceful Pieta, The Deposition is filled with sorrow and despair.

Two of Michelangelo’s works are dedicated to a slave. One is the Dying slave and another is the Rebellious slave. The Dying Slave shows a young man in a state of surrender, his head tilted back and his eyes closed as if he is slipping into space. The sculpture’s pose, with one arm raised above his head and the other resting on his chest, shows a sense of giving up and how the slave has accepted his fate.
