The police officials in the city are going above and beyond their duties to help the people who have been worse affected by the lockdown.
Ashish Bhatia, police commissioner, Ahmedabad Police, says, "Ahmedabad Police has been helping the needy by providing food and ration kits during the lockdown. The police is helping with coordinated efforts from the AMC along with various NGOs in the city.”
CP Rao, a police official from the city has been working tirelessly to provide food and other essentials to the needy in the city.
She shares, “The lockdown has forced the labourers and the wage earners to stay at home which essentially means that they no longer have an income. We have been able to get in touch with numerous such people who desperately need our help. My colleagues and I have been distributing ration kits to the people who need it. We have also been offering cooked meals to many people in the city. In a day, we give over 300 plates of hot food to the needy.” Rao says that the police patrol the streets every day, and they often come across people who desperately need help. “We have been going over our days to understand how many slum dwellers might be affected by the lockdown, we make phone calls too and while patrolling we ask people whom we meet if they need help. A lot of times we get information from people who tell us about senior citizens who need help, or widows and widowers who are alone and have no means of buying food. We help them too. The various NGOs in the city also help us get in touch with people who need our help.”
After the lockdown, there has been a steady rise in the number of immigrant workers who have come to the city to seek shelter and food. GH Pathan, police inspector with the Riverfront Police Department shares, “There are many areas in the city where labourers from other cities and states reside. These people have no means of going back to their respective cities or states, and are now living here with no means. They have had no work ever since the lockdown. We have been trying hard to get in touch with such people and offer them food and ration kits. There are slum dwellers and homeless people who are in dire need of essentials and we give them food packets. In a day we distribute over 500 food packets. For those who have no means to cook, we offer them food twice a day, and those who can cook, we give them raw vegetables and other things.” Pathan adds that patrolling around the city has made her come across many people in the isolated pockets of the city who need help. “Many homeless have started living at the riverfront since my team and I promised them food and shelter. We have approached the AMC also, so that these people can get the facilities of a toilet too and running water,” shares Pathan. She goes on to add how she has been working hard to explain the importance of social distancing to these people. “I urge them to maintain a distance of three feet. We have distributed masks and sanitisers too. They understand the threat that the virus poses, and practice social distancing as well,” adds Pathan.
