Two dresses worn by Britain's late Princess Diana sold for £169,000 at auction.A black crepe evening gown worn by the princess - who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 - on a state visit in 1992 raised £88,000 while the second item - a strapless silk and chiffon dress - which was worn by Diana on two occasions, once to a London performance of musical 'Miss Saigon' in 1987, and again in 1989 to the Cannes Film Festival, sold for $133,000.
Both gowns were made by the late princess' favourite designer Catherine Walker - who created Carole Middleton's royal wedding outfit - and were purchased by an unnamed museum in the sale hosted by Julien's Auctions in Los Angeles.
Darren Julien, president and CEO of Julien's Auctions said, "We did have bidders from all over the world participating, and it's great to have them go to a museum where they are going to be on display and appreciated by the public."
With a portion of the proceeds going to charity, organisers of the event said, “The recent wedding between Diana's eldest son Prince William and Princess Catherine helped increase the sale price.”
Similarly, a see-through woollen dress worn by Catherine in a fashion show at St. Andrew's University, Scotland, recently sold at auction for £78,000, reaching seven times the estimated price.
Asked about the buyer, the man who bid for him via telephone said, "He thinks it's an iconic piece and is very happy with the purchase."
