Modesty is probably prince of Indian billiards Pankaj Advani’s middle name. Advani who’s a Padma Shree and holds the record of two grand doubles, says that when he’s out there playing, “there’s only me and the table” and claims that he treats the game as he would “treat life,” takes “losses” in his stride and likes to “surprise” himself constantly. Advani, who participated in the World Snooker Championship held recently got talking to us.
Excerpts from an interview:
You are the only cueist to have won both the timed and points format at the IBSF World Billiards Championship in 2005 and 2008. How does it feel to be so successful at such a young age?I think I’ve just been lucky so far. I try to give my best to the game, whether I am successful or not at the end of the day is not something I really bother about.
Who has been your greatest influence ? It has to be my coach Arvind Savur. He’s always been there for me.
Did you ever know you’d play professional snooker? I’ve never really planned anything in my life. I wanted to be a pilot because I wanted to see the world. When I was 10, I started playing billiards at a local club and fell in love with the game. I have had an ongoing love affair with the game ever since. Now, I am living my dream. I get to travel a lot and see different countries. So no regrets at all for not having learnt to fly a plane!
Your brother Shree who introduced you to snooker has played the game for six years. What’s your equation with him?Shree is a friend and a source of strength. Whenever I feel low about anything, he’s there for me. He couldn’t continue with the game because he went off to do his MBA in Australia. He tells me he lives his love for the game through me. All my games are dedicated to him.
You lost your father as a kid. Any fond memories?I was six when I lost him. I never felt the impact of his loss because my mother has been very strong. I don’t remember much about him. Once when I was my usual bratty self, dad had locked me in the bathroom. I want to tell dad that I’d not have been a brat had I known that he wouldn’t be there
...And your mother?Mom’s an angel. She’s the coolest mom ever. She is our guiding force but never interferes in whatever we do. And this has actually helped me progress in the game.
Is she also cool about the girls in your life?
Oh, yes, very cool. Probably because she knows there is no one special in my life at the moment.
Are you a typical Leo?I am an introvert by nature and keep things to myself. But I do have the traits of an obstinate and dominating Leo too.
You have lightening in your feet.Well I think I dance well and enjoy it too. I am a great Michael Jackson fan. I like the typical Bollywood dance moves and can do them really well too!
What else do you enjoy?I am a fun-loving person and am crazy about my hair. I love experimenting with it and most times get it right. I also indulge in bowling and I am good at it.
