There’s been a significant increase of 36.39% of average daily torrent downloads since January, with more than 11 billion visits globally to illegal piracy sites since the health crisis

INDIA

Indian movie downloading websites like Khatrimaza, 123Movies, FzMovies are seeing 62% more traffic, according to GaAtecha, a data research and protection company from Noida.

The new Bollywood release Angrezi Medium was leaked soon after its online release, days after Baaghi 3 met with the same fate.

US

Coronavirus has prompted the revival of piracy sites like Popcorn Time. New movies like Bloodshot, The Invisible Man, Emma, and The Hunt were available as free torrents, hours after their online release.

ITALYLocal Italian torrent websites have all seen a spike in traffic. Popular local piracy streaming app Real-Debrid crashed on March 15, and the site blamed it on the record downloads they were experiencing amidst the pandemic.

China

Film piracy visits increased by 89% from Jan 18 - 26, the day after Chinese New Year and when the news of the pandemic was starting to spread globally. Among the most illegally streamed movies were Contagion, Parasite and Pandemic.

Hits for the movie on piracy sites increased from 56 visits last July, to 546 visits on January 7, 2020. There were more than 30,000 visits on January 30 alone

What’s driving this surge in piracy?
"In the last 20 odd days, the downloading of pirated films has gone up as people want to consume entertainment to relax amidst unrest. With no new movies releasing, no other avenues of entertainment, and OTT platforms having limited options, people are resorting to pirated films," says Navin Ganjawala, co-founder of Texus Data Security Services, Pune.
