How Unisex jewellery is making ground in fluid fashion
n the ever-evolving world of high-street fashion, gender neutrality is swiftly carving a space for itself today, with celebrities including Harry Styles and Billy Porter bringing fluid fashion to the mainstream. But gender-fluid fashion is not just about clothes. Closer home, many millennials and zoomers (Gen Z) are drawn to arguably the next big thing in fashion — unisex jewellery.
Aadyaa, a jewellery line based in Pune, offers zodiac pendants, septum rings and naths as part of their unisex collections. Millennials today are well-researched and do not believe in labelling fashion, note its founders, Sayalee and Jaydeep.
“We constantly get design requests for accessories from men who want to explore with different kinds of jewellery,” Sayalee adds. For instance, their team is now designing a mangalsutra bracelet for a to-be groom. “This client, who ordered a mangalsutra for his bride, also told us to make something for him as he is a big believer in gender equality. There has been a lot of change in the way people think,” the duo observes.
Fashion stylist Arushi Parakh believes that jewellery should be simple and interchangeable. This line of thought reflects in her modern jewellery line Melt. “The idea is to own jewellery that is easy to wear and repeat with different outfits. If you have a partner or a brother who wears a piece of jewellery that you also like, you must be able to wear it, too. We started the unisex collection only this year, but from the get-go, we have had male takers for jewellery,” she says.

Along with fluidity, comfort is also something to keep in mind while picking the right accessory, says stylist and fashion designer Suresh Menon. “Men who are new to the world of jewellery can start out with small pieces like earring and rings, and then take it from there,” he says.
For casual wear: Earthy, handcrafted pendants or beads
For formal wear: Subtle platinum or gold pieces
