Gurgaon police’s helpline directory: yay & nay

Here’s a lowdown on all the safety helpline numbers available to Gurgaonwaasis, and which of them actually work.
Often referred to as the notorious cousin of Delhi because of the nature and frequency of crime here, Gurgaon, especially the police, is slowly trying to improve its public image and establish a connect with the aam janta. The most recent effort was the launch of two new helplines – the Traffic Police helpline and the Anti-Obscene Call helpline – by the new police commissioner, Alok Mittal.
We decided to find out which of these numbers are actually worth calling at the time of a crisis.
Senior citizen helpline: 0124-2221559 and 9416092569
Quick to respond and offer help. Assure immediate action by forwarding the complaint to the concerned police station. But if you are expecting a complaint number as reference to track the progress, then forget it. All you are going to get is a sweet voice and an assurance. A cop in charge at the helpline, on the condition of anonymity said, “The cell has been set up to cater to the safety and security of the elderly in the city, and also to redress grievances of the elderly and to help them in their medical emergencies. We receive six-seven calls a month, and our team, of one ASI, two head constables and one constable, is always available for help.”
Women and children helpline: 0124-2335100, 1091 and 1090
This has to be the most effective one from the Gurgaon police, with trained women officers. They will give you a patient hearing and take down your complaint, assuring help. What’s more, they even picked up our call after just two rings.
“Yeh 24 ghante running helpline hai aur hum har type ki calls entertain karte hain. Yahaan tak ki agar aapko auto nahi mil raha raat ke samay toh aap hamari helpline pe call karein, hum aapki poori tarah se madat karnenge,” said an officer in charge.
Anti-obscene calls helpline: 9582226610
Quick to respond, but a not-so-pleasant way of handling the complaint. Details like car ka number, ladke ka phone number, phase number, kaun si gali, kaun sa district can get to your nerves.
Cyber cell helpline: 0124-2222644
All you are going to hear when you call at this number is ‘Yeh number maujood nahi hai. This number does not exist.’ So much for a more net-savvy force.
Anti-ragging helpline: 9999981819
The number given on the Gurgaon Police website as the anti-ragging helpline number actually belongs to a senior police officer, who had no idea why his number was put up on the website. However, he did help us by giving us one mobile number and one landline number as the actual anti-ragging helplines. While the mobile number went unanswered, the landline number got us connected back to the senior citizen helpline.
