From Luidia superba to Luidia magnifica : 8 starfish known for their massive size

Starfish are among the most captivating marine creatures, showcasing incredible diversity in form and size. Some species grow far bigger than others, with remarkable arm spans, bulk, and adaptations that make them stand out in the ocean world.

One of the largest starfish in the world with an arm span of more than 4 feet. Found in deep waters, this rare species demonstrates just how massive starfish can grow under unique marine conditions.

Among the ocean’s fastest starfish, this giant can stretch up to around 1 meter (3.3 ft) across and weigh over 5 kilograms. With around 24 arms and 15,000 tube feet, it moves quickly, playing a vital ecological role.

This Indo-Pacific giant is renowned for its bulk, reaching up to around 70 cm in diameter and weighing around over 6 kilograms. Its thick body and slow movements reflect adaptations suited for survival in deeper, calmer waters.

Another remarkable member of the Thromidia genus, this starfish stands out for its incredible mass, sometimes exceeding 13 pounds. Found in tropical seas, its bulky form makes it one of the ocean’s true starfish giants.

The largest five-armed starfish known, Luidia superba can grow with a radius exceeding 40 cm. Its slender yet long arms give it a striking appearance, and it inhabits sandy ocean floors, feeding mostly on mollusks.

Found in the Caribbean and western Atlantic, this brightly coloured starfish can grow up to 50 cm wide. Its thick, cushioned body not only protects it from predators but also makes it highly distinctive among sea stars.

This starfish is notorious and known to be big with its lethal spines which can be up to 80 cm in diameter. It feeds viciously on coral reefs and although interesting, it presents ecological problems as it destroys coral ecosystems.

This is a much unrecognised, yet giant, and has several arms that run out like extended blades. It grows well in sandy seabeds and shallow water, and it takes advantage of its size and flexibility to hunt effectively.
