Karthik CS believes that he and his wife Namrata resembled the characters in the movie Jab We Met while they were in a courtship. So, when they decided to get married, they got one of their wedding invitations done resembling the movie’s poster. Similarly he made a second one based on the poster of Love Ka The End. Karthik explains, “It shows that we are moving on to the next beautiful phase of our life after a wonderful love story.
We thought this would be the best way to recall those good memories,” he says.
Be it a caricature of themselves or a pre-wedding photo shoot at a place where they first met each other, there are several youngsters like Karthik, who go a step further and narrate their love story through invites.
“Everyone wants people to remember their invite even after several years. My wedding card had a line on top of it that said, ‘1+1=1/2’. Yes, it sounds a bit absurd at first look. However, it is true with marriages. Anything that comes along your way — be it happiness, sadness or even a cup of coffee, it is shared by both. People still call me and ask me where I had done the invite,” says N Raam Prasad, from an advertising agency in Chennai.
From highlighting an interesting incident to a cartoon of place that was significant during their romance, youngsters want uniqueness. “Recently, I did a caricature of a couple meeting each other on a bus and falling in love,” says SPK Rajapandian, a city cartoonist.
Meanwhile, Viswanathan Ganesan and his wife sent out invitations to friends, which was more like a movie poster. “A friend of mine, who is also photographer, came up with this idea. We struck some 10 different poses and he clicked, designed and it came out like a comic,” states Viswanathan. Another couple Srinivasa Raghavan and Simna wanted to put in some out of the box idea and reflect their customs as well. “Our caricatures were drawn wearing traditional marriage attire and the card also had a few lines from a film song,” they say.
While some say people do this for the uniqueness, a few others like caricature artist Prasanth Nair say there is also a marketing strategy involved in this. “As people attend so many marriages during this auspicious time, they are likely to forget a few and miss out attending them. If a wedding card stands out because of its creativity, there is less possibility of someone forgetting the ceremony. On the other hand, only those couples with that never mind attitude go for these quirky designs,” he explains.
