Astronomical Events in October 2025: From Harvest Supermoon to Orionid Meteor Shower and more

All hail October 2025; for this month is brimming with celestial spectacles that promise to captivate both seasoned astronomers and casual stargazers alike. From the luminous glow of the Harvest Supermoon to the fiery trails of meteor showers, the night sky offers an array of astounding astronomical events that are set to hold us in awe and surprise as we look up and marvel.

Freeze watch issued in California: Know list of affected areas and expected temperatures

With cooler nights and earlier darkness, the heavens are set to unveil a parade of celestial events. The crown jewel is the Harvest Moon on October 6/7, when the full moon will appear unusually large and bright — in fact, it qualifies as a supermoon due to its proximity to Earth. Soon after, the Draconid meteor shower may surprise us in early October, while the ever-reliable Orionid meteor shower peaks around October 21-22 in ideally dark conditions. Meanwhile, new comets like C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) and C/2025 R2 (SWAN) promise fresh cosmic showpieces, and planets such as Saturn, Jupiter, and Venus will weave graceful dances with the Moon. Add in minor events like stellar conjunctions, the opposition of dwarf planet Ceres, and World Space Week (October 4-10), and you’ve got a full month of cosmic riches.

Safe to say, it’s going to be a spectacular month for skywatchers and astronomy enthusiasts. So, whether you're an experienced stargazer or a curious newcomer, whether you're in the heart of the city or nestled in the countryside, get ready with your camping bags, eyeglasses, and astronomical equipment – we’re about to embark on a journey through the stars and planets that will grace our skies this October.

2/10

Harvest Supermoon: October 6/7

The month kicks off with a celestial treat: the Harvest Supermoon. Occurring on the night of October 6/7, this full moon is the largest and brightest of the year. A supermoon happens when the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, making it appear about 7% larger and 15% brighter than usual. The Harvest Moon, named for its timing near the autumnal equinox, traditionally helped farmers harvest crops using its bright light. This year, it coincides with the equinox, enhancing its significance.

3/10

Draconid Meteor Shower: October 8-10

Following closely is the Draconid Meteor Shower, peaking between October 8 and 10. Unlike most meteor showers that are best viewed after midnight, the Draconids are best observed in the early evening hours. Originating from the tail of comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, this shower offers a chance to witness meteors streaking across the sky, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere.

4/10

Orionid Meteor Shower: October 20-21

Mid-month brings the Orionid Meteor Shower, peaking on the night of October 20 into the morning of October 21. This shower is a remnant of Halley's Comet, and its meteors are known for their bright, fast-moving streaks across the sky. The absence of a bright moon during this period provides ideal viewing conditions, allowing up to 20 meteors per hour under dark skies.

5/10

Venus and the Waning Crescent Moon: October 19

On October 19, a beautiful conjunction occurs between the waning crescent moon and Venus, often referred to as the "Morning Star." In the early morning hours, look to the eastern horizon to witness this celestial pairing. The soft glow of the crescent moon alongside the brilliance of Venus creates a serene and picturesque scene in the pre-dawn sky.

6/10

Camelopardalid Meteor Shower: October 5

The Camelopardalid Meteor Shower is expected to be active around October 5. While not as prominent as other showers, it offers an opportunity for early risers to catch a glimpse of meteors originating from the debris of comet 209P/LINEAR. Observers in the Northern Hemisphere may have the best chance of spotting these meteors during the early morning hours.

7/10

Zodiacal Light: October 19-31

For those interested in a more subtle celestial phenomenon, the Zodiacal Light will be visible from October 19 through the end of the month. This faint, triangular glow appears in the western sky just after sunset and is caused by sunlight scattering off interplanetary dust particles. It's best viewed from dark locations away from city lights and offers a serene addition to the evening sky.

8/10

Comet C/2025 R2 (SWAN): October 20

A newly discovered green-glowing comet, C/2025 R2 (SWAN), will pass closest to Earth on October 20. First observed on September 11, 2025, this comet is a rare sight, with a 22,000-year orbit around the sun. It will be visible in the western sky after sunset, particularly from the Southern Hemisphere, offering a unique opportunity to witness this celestial visitor.

9/10

Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon): October 8

Another comet, C/2025 A6 (Lemmon), will pass perihelion on October 8. Discovered by the Mount Lemmon Survey, this non-periodic comet has an inbound orbital period of about 1,350 years. While it may not be visible to the naked eye, it's an intriguing object for telescope enthusiasts to observe as it makes its closest approach to the Sun.

10/10

World Space Week: October 4-10

Beyond the night sky, October also hosts World Space Week, celebrated from October 4 to 10. This annual event, recognized by the United Nations, aims to inspire interest in space exploration and science. Various organizations worldwide host events, workshops, and exhibitions to engage the public in the wonders of space.
