As weddings go minimalist, thanks to the pandemic, so does the décor
With sustainability being the key word of the pandemic-ridden 2020, the wedding industry is arguably one of the biggest to have been bit by the minimalist bug. And along with a drop in the guest list and exorbitance, the décor, too, has got a minimalist and often, an eco-friendly makeover.
Locally sourced interiors
These days, couples are increasingly preferring to go for a simple yet chic décor, with locally sourced interiors, says Nilma, a conscious wedding designer, who runs With Love, Nilma.

“While the younger generation is often mindful of reducing the carbon print in weddings, the coronavirus era has nudged them to pursue it even more thoroughly,” she says.
The idea is to enhance a small mandap space with the help of products sourced from local artisans who have been unemployed during the pandemic. “For instance, Channapatna dolls and locally sourced flowers can be incorporated in the background.” she adds.
Evoking 50s nostalgia
Apart from reducing the carbon footprint, an eco-friendly décor has one more advantage. “Couples today look for a décor that is aesthetic and affordable. Banana leaves, marigold flowers, rangolis and a couple of brass lamps can scream elegance, and be affordable at the same time, too,” says Kalpana Rajesh, founder of the decor venture DecorbyKrishna, who focuses on bringing out a 50s and 60s vibe through her décor.

“Earlier, we did not have polyester drapes or plastic structures for backdrops. They improvised with flowers and banana leaves, which are a hit now,” she adds.
Boho all the way
Boho wedding themes can be simple yet dreamy, says wedding designer Sasikala of Wedding Chakra. “Macrame curtains with floral plants in the corner of photo booths is a crowd pleaser. Most couples come up with their own consciously-curated mood board today for décor,” she adds.
