7 green birds that are true embodiments of nature's beauty

From emerald forest canopies to tropical rainforest glades, green-feathered birds add a lush layer of vibrancy to the natural world. Their vivid plumage, often combined with dazzling other colours, does more than delight our eyes - it plays roles in camouflage, mating displays, and ecological interactions. Here are seven standout species whose green tones make them living streaks of colour in flight or perched among leaves.

2/8

Resplendent quetzal

This exquisite bird of Central America is renowned for its glimmering green-golden body and long tail feathers that reach up to a metre in males. It has a habitat in cloud forests across Mexico to Panama and survives on fruits and insects primarily. The quetzal's iridescent feathers change colour as light falls upon them.

3/8

Green jay

The Green Jay, native to Mexico and Central America, has bright green wings, a blue-and-black head, and a bold yellowish tail. Known for its intelligence, this bird frequently employs tools to find food, remove insects or construct nests. It's extremely social, existing in tiny family units and demonstrating incredible cooperation during foraging and territorial defense.

4/8

Emerald toucanet

A smaller toucan relative, the Emerald Toucanet is covered in vibrant green plumage and adorned with a striking multi-coloured bill. Distributed from south Mexico to north South America, it inhabits humid woodlands and mountain slopes. Its striking hues grant it camouflage amidst leaves while its boisterous croaking call resounds through the forest canopy.

5/8

Glistening-green tanager

Endemic to Ecuador and Colombia, this tiny tanager is known for its lustrous emerald green hue that shines in sunlight. It likes to search for food high up in moist montane woodlands. Its sheen and reclusive lifestyle are the envy of birders who cherish the sight. The bird's eye-catching timbre allows it to blend invisibly in thick Andean vegetation.

6/8

Common green magpie

The Southeast Asian and northeast Indian bird boasts of a bright green body, black eye-stripe, red bill and legs. It is a beautiful animal but a sneak thief, which eats insects, small mammals, and reptiles. In the wild, diet has an impact on feather colour, which is demonstrated by its unusual pigment fading in captivity in the absence of natural carotenoids.

7/8

Blossom-headed parakeet

This small, social parakeet brightens the forests of Southeast Asia and woodlands of India with its lime-green body and pinkish or bluish head. It is agile and energetic, often found in flocks, which it chats about loudly while foraging for fruits, seeds, and grains. Its brilliant colour helped the blossom-headed parakeet attract mates and give camouflage when resting among foliage.

8/8

Green-headed tanager

This colorful bird is endemic to Atlantic Forests in South America. It has a turquoise-green head, yellow-orange rump, and a black back. The claws persistently vary on fruiting trees and gardens, and during the day its brilliant colours glow even under shade. They can brighten even the darkest wooden paths, and even at small size they hold the spirit of the tropics with their energetic behaviour and beautiful plumage.
These colourful representatives demonstrate that green is anything but monotonous, from the mystical quetzal to the laughing parakeet. Each species exhibits liveliness and colour in the evolution of the stunning birds that live in them. Brightly coloured feathers serve not only beauty but also survival, and the harmony of art and evolution continue in and of the world.
