7 animals whose names start with letter Y

Animals whose names begin with the letter Y might not be the first ones we think of, but they form an intriguing mix of species from across the world. Some are found in icy mountains, others in deep oceans or quiet forests. Each of them brings something unique to the natural world, showing how unexpectedly diverse wildlife can be when we explore beyond familiar names. Let’s have a look at some animals having their name with the letter Y.

2/8

Yak

The yak is a long-haired cold-resistant bovine native to the Himalayan regions. The animal is known for its endurance, hence living through extreme altitude and freezing temperatures because of its thick coat and strong lungs. The mountain communities use yaks for milk, meat, and transportation. Yaks are calm, social creatures, flouring in herds despite their large size, and contribute highly to high-altitude ecosystems.

3/8

Yellow mongoose

The yellow mongoose is a small, agile mammal native to southern Africa. It lives in open grasslands and semi-deserts, often found near the burrows of meerkats and ground squirrels. Its golden-yellow coat gives it its name, and it relies on speed and alertness to detect predators. The yellow mongoose primarily eats insects but can also hunt small reptiles. Playful behaviour and social structure are some of the interesting attributes of this species.

4/8

Yabby

A yabby is a hardy freshwater crayfish that lives in rivers, dams, and billabongs of Australia. These crustaceans are famous for their outstanding ability to survive the dry seasons by burrowing deep into mud in order to find moisture. Strong-clawed and hardy, yabbies take an important part in aquatic ecosystems. They feed on plant matter, detritus, and small organisms and help maintain water quality.

5/8

Yellowfin tuna

The yellowfin tuna is a fast, powerful fish found in the warm ocean waters of different parts of the world. Its long, bright yellow fins make it one of the most valued fish in both commercial and sport fishing. Yellowfin tuna are remarkable swimmers, migrating over long distances and diving deep into the ocean. Their diet consists of smaller fish and squid. They are vital to marine food chains, though sustainable fishing remains important.

6/8

Yaffle (Green woodpecker)

The yaffle is also the name given to the European green woodpecker, which is recognisable by its laughing, high-pitched call. It is found in woodlands and gardens throughout Europe and boasts bright green plumage, mostly with a red crown atop the head. Such birds mostly spend their time on the ground, hunting their favourite food-ants. A tough beak assists the yaffle in pecking through the soil and decaying wood.

7/8

Yellow tang

The yellow tang is a bright-yellow-coloured reef fish that can be found in the warm waters surrounding Hawaii and the Pacific Ocean. It has an oval shape and manner of swimming. It grazes on algae that might otherwise overwhelm corals, and its role in coral reef health is quite significant. Yellow tangs are peaceful, social fish, popular among marine aquariums, although their wild populations are subject to conservation protection against overcollection.

8/8

Yorkshire terrier

Yorkshire Terrier is a British breed of toy dog of terrier type, which is also a species of animal that starts with the letter Y and deserves to be included on the list. Originating in England, this small dog is energetic, alert, and known for its silky, steel-blue coat. Despite their toy-sized exterior, they have large, bold personalities and loyal attachments to their families, which makes them worldwide popular companions.
