10 animals whose names start with the letter P!

The animal kingdom is filled with extraordinary species, each with features that make them stand out from the rest. Among them, many fascinating creatures begin with the letter P, showcasing unique adaptations, rare behaviours, and striking appearances. From deep ocean dwellers to elusive mammals and vibrant reptiles, these animals highlight the diversity and wonder of wildlife across the globe. Here are ten such animal species that have their names begin with the letter P.

2/11

Pangolin

The pangolin is a shy, nocturnal mammal covered in protective keratin scales - mammal known for this feature in the world. It curls into a tight ball when threatened and uses its long, sticky tongue to feed on ants and termites. Found in Africa and Asia, pangolins play an important role in maintaining insect populations.

3/11

Pufferfish

The pufferfish is known for its remarkable ability to inflate its body when threatened, making itself too large for predators to swallow. Many species contain tetrodotoxin, a potent chemical that can be deadly. Despite its toxic nature, this fish is admired for its bright patterns and fascinating defense behaviour.

4/11

Proboscis monkey

The proboscis monkey is instantly recognisable by its large, pendulous nose, which helps amplify vocal calls. Native to Borneo’s mangrove forests, these monkeys are excellent swimmers with partially webbed feet. Their unique appearance and social behaviour make them one of the most distinctive primates.

5/11

Pink fairy armadillo

The pink fairy armadillo is the smallest and rarest species of armadillo, recognised by its rosy shell and tiny body. Living mostly underground, it uses its powerful claws to dig through soft soil. This elusive creature prefers solitude and is rarely seen in the wild.

6/11

Pika

Pikas are small, round mammals found in cold mountain habitats, especially in Asia and North America. They don’t hibernate, so they collect grasses and flowers to store for winter. Their high-pitched whistles and lively behaviour make them charming symbols of alpine ecosystems.

7/11

Parrotfish

Parrotfish are vibrant reef dwellers known for beak-like teeth that scrape algae from coral. Some species change colour and even sex as they mature. They also produce a mucus cocoon at night to hide their scent from predators, playing a key role in maintaining healthy coral reefs.

8/11

Patagonian mara

The Patagonian mara resembles a small deer or rabbit, but is actually a large rodent native to Argentina. It can run at high speeds and often mate for life. With long legs and rabbit-like ears, the mara is uniquely adapted to open grasslands and is known for its gentle, calm nature.

9/11

Panther chameleon

Panther chameleon is known to have its dramatic colour shifts which indicate mood, temperature and communication and not camouflage. It has an extraordinary vision, and it can move each eye separately, which is characteristic of Madagascar. It is one of the most colourful reptiles due to its patterned colouration.

10/11

Porcupinefish

The porcupine fish is often mistaken with the pufferfish but unlike the latter, the porcupinefish inflates when it is threatened and acts by raising long sharp spines. It is sluggish and is found in warm oceans and it is well shielded. It is an interesting animal in the tropical waters by its expressive eyes and spotted patterns.

11/11

Platypus

One of the most eclectic animals in the world is the platypus - a mammal, which lays eggs, uses electrosensing to hunt, and bears a duck bill. It is also a powerful swimmer and spends most of its time in freshwater streams due to its native origin of Australia. Its biology remains distinct.
