Feeding the crow

While the sound of crows is frowned upon by many as a bad omen, feeding black crows is a profound practice deeply rooted in Hindu spirituality and culture. It symbolizes respect for ancestors, the importance of fulfilling duties selflessly, gratitude for nature, attraction of blessings and the embrace of simplicity and humility. This seemingly simple act is an example of Hindu beliefs and its inclusivity be it man or animal. It reflects a rich spiritual heritage that emphasizes the interconnectedness of all life and the pursuit of a meaningful, balanced and virtuous existence.

Here we list a few reasons why one should feed black crows as per Hindu Shashtras.
2/6

Crows as messengers of ancestors

In Hindu tradition, crows are believed to serve as messengers between the physical and spiritual worlds. It is thought that when we offer food to these black-winged creatures, they carry the essence of our offerings to our departed ancestors. This belief stems from the understanding that ancestors continue to exist in a subtle form and are always present to guide and protect their descendants. By providing sustenance to crows, we express our gratitude and reverence to these ancestors.

Balancing karma

Karma, the law of cause and effect, is a fundamental concept in Hindu philosophy. The Hindu Shastras suggest that every action we take has consequences, and by feeding crows, we can balance our karma. When we provide food to these creatures, it is seen as a selfless and compassionate act, which can help mitigate negative karma and bring positive energy into our lives.
This practice aligns with the belief that the universe operates on the principle of balance.

Crows are the vehicle of Shani Dev

The crows hold a special place in Hindu mythology. Lord Shani, the deity associated with the planet Saturn, is often depicted with a crow. As Saturn's influence is believed to bring both hardships and rewards, feeding crows is seen as a way to appease Lord Shani and seek his blessings for a smoother journey through life's ups and downs.

It is recommended by many to feed crows especially during Amavasya and Shradh.

Rahu Mahadasha

Feeding crows during Rahu Maha Dasha, a period associated with the intense influence of the planet Rahu in Vedic astrology, is believed to mitigate the challenging effects of this planetary energy. It is thought to appease Rahu and seek protection from its turbulent and unpredictable influences.

Enhancing spiritual awareness

In Hinduism, the path to spiritual enlightenment often involves performing rituals and practices that can expand one's consciousness. Feeding crows is considered a simple yet powerful way to enhance one's spiritual awareness. By participating in this ritual, one is encouraged to pause, reflect and connect with the divine presence in all things, including the unassuming crow.
