The secret language of Gods: 5 sacred hand mudras and their hidden powers

Hand mudras are sacred gestures in Hinduism, Buddhism, and yogic traditions, and are often referred to as the silent language of the soul. They are energetic seals believed to influence the body, mind, and spirit. In ancient texts, mudras are considered a divine language, one that communicates with the subtle energies of the universe or even the gods themselves.

2/7

What are hand mudras

Mudra comes from a Sanskrit word meaning seal, mark or gesture. Each mudra is a specific combination of arrangement of fingers and hands that forms an energetic circuit, a conduit of channeling prana energy, emotions and health.

In yoga sutras, mudras are used during meditation, rituals, dancing as well as healing practices, to align and awaken a higher sense of consciousness

3/7

Why are mudras called the language of the Gods

Mudras channel the shakti (divine energy) of a deity. Deities are like visual mantras; they are used by gods to manifest will, grace, protection or destruction. Just like Shiva in Nataraja performs the Abhaya Mudra, signifying “Do not fear”. Apart from this, mudras are believed to be energetic signals that align the practitioner with the deity’s frequency. Chin mudra, during meditation, symbolises the union of the self with Brahman.

In temples, the murtis (sacred statue) of a god is not a mere conduit of worship, but it is a living form infused with divine presence. Maa Lakshmi often holds her hand in the Varada Mudra, which represents the bestowal of boons, wealth, and well-being.

4/7

Abhaya mudra

Often known as ‘Gesture of fearlessness’. This mudra is performed by raising the right hand to shoulder height with the plan facing outward and fingers extended upwards. It is often seen in statues and paintings of dieties like Vishnu, Buddha and Durga, where it radiates divine protection and a promise of safety. Abhaya mudra, as the name suggests, is believed to dispel fear and negative energy.

5/7

Surya mudra

Surya mudra, or the gesture of the sun, is formed by folding the ring finger to the base of the thumb and gently pressing it down with the thumb, while the other fingers remain extended. This mudra, is believed to increase the fire element, agni, in the body and reduce earth element. Surya mudra, invokes clarity and strength of the sun, burning away ignorance and awakening inner light.

6/7

Apana mudra

This gesture, is said to activate the apana vayu, the downward energy-flow. Mostly associated with the root and sacral chakras, helping the one who practices to release all the physical and emotional toxins. In yogic traditions, apana mudra supports detoxification, digestion and reproductive health.

7/7

Kubera mudra

This gesture is of manifestation of wealth. Kubera mudra is named after Kubera, the Hindu god of wealth and abundance. It is formed by bringing the tips of the thumb, index finger and middle finger together, while folding the ring and little fingers into the palm. In many spiritual practices, kubera mudra is seen as a way to align desire with higher purpose.
