Purana Durga Bari: The immovable goddess of Varanasi and a testament to eternal devotion

Purana Durga Bari is a temple situated in Varanasi that is devoted to the goddess Durga, also known as the great mother goddess, who is worshiped all over India. The idol of Goddess Durga was installed by Kali Prasanna Mukhopadhyay in 1767. Maa's divine moorti was made using traditional materials, clay, straw, bamboo, sutli and jute strings. Legend has it that in 1767 during Vijayadashami, devotees attempted to carry the idol to the ganges for immersion (visarjan), despite putting all the efforts the idol did not budge. That night, in Kali Prasanna's dream Durga Maa came herself and said that she wished to stay permanently in Kashi, from then one, the idol was not immersed. As of today, it has been around 250-260 years and this practice continues.
