A day for Lord Vishnu

Lord Vishnu is one of the principal gods in Hinduism. He is worshipped in his many forms, from the playful yet protective Lord Krishna to fair and fierce Narsimha avatar. For the Vaishnava sect, Lord Vishnu is the supreme deity, and in all is the operator deity for Hindus. In India, and abroad, there are several temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his many different avatars and here we list some of them.

2/7

Banke Bihari temple, Vrindavan

The Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan is dedicated to Lord Krishna, another incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The idol of Shri Krishna in this temple is in the ‘Tribhanga posture’, which means he is bending in three places, which is a symbol of his playful nature. The idol of Banke Bihari in this temple and its eyes are so charming and mesmerising that people say that they get lost in his eyes. So much so, that the priests have to cover the idol with curtains every few minutes so that people don’t fall in love with the Shri Krishna and vice versa.

In the Banke Bihari temple people can be seen singing, dancing, queuing up to get one glance of Lord Krishna.

3/7

Dwarkadhish temple, Gujarat

Another temple dedicated to an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Shri Krishna, is the Dwarkadhish mandir. The idol of Lord Krishna in Dwarkadhish is made from pitch black stone, and Krishna can be seen in a straight posture, standing upright. Everyday Shri Krishna is adorned with beautiful clothes, colourful crowns, ornaments, and much more. In the temple, there is Mangal aarti early in the morning, and then as the sun sets there is Shayan aarti.

4/7

Ram mandir, Ayodhya

The newly built Ram mandir in Ayodhya is dedicated to Lord Ram, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. The temple was built after a series of struggles, decisions, and court judgements, and was then constructed at the birthplace of Lord Ram. The idol of Lord Ram in the temple is of his ‘bal avatar’ or Ram lalla, who can be seen standing with a bow in hand. Since its Pran Pratishtha ceremony in January 2024, the temple sees elaborate daily rituals including morning and evening aartis, and offerings of flowers, fruits, and sweets.

5/7

Vitthal Rukmini temple, Maharashtra

A beautifully carved, yet minimal temple of Lord Vishnu is Vitthal Rukmini in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. This one is dedicated to Lord Vitthal, considered a form of Lord Vishnu, along with Devi Rukmini. The idol of Vitthal in this temple is quite unique, as one can see him standing upright with his hands on his waist, almost as if he is waiting for the devotees to come inside.

6/7

Ranganathaswamy temple

The Ranganathaswamy temple is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, the reclining form of Vishnu. The idol shows Lord Vishnu lying down on a serpent, with Goddess Lakshmi at his feet.
The temple itself is absolutely beautiful with many different colours, detailed carvings, and a beautiful scent of sandalwood as soon as you enter the premises.
In this temple, Vaikuntha Ekadashi is the most important festival, and celebrates the opening of the Vaikuntha Dwar.

7/7

Badrinath Dham

Badrinath temple, a part of the Char Dham pilgrimage, is dedicated to Badrinarayan, another form of Vishnu. The idol inside is made of black shaligram stone and shows Lord Vishnu in a meditative state.
Located high up in Uttarakhand, the temple itself is beautiful and huge, and the everyday offerings of milk, sweets, Tulsi leaves, and the likes is a sight to look at.
