The Yuga of confusion and disasters

According to Hindu scriptures, time is divided into 4 yugas - Satyug, Tretayug, Dwaparyug, and Kalyug. Kalyug is the age we are in now, and this is said to be the Yuga of spiritual decline, corrupt senses, high ego, confusion and disasters all around, and especially, the ills of materialism.
It is the dark age where values in people diminish over time and the mind is distracted by more and many.

2/6

Why devotion matters today

It is said that Kalyug is the time when devotion is of utmost importance. Because if people lose their touch with devotion, with God, and with the higher powers, moral decline will come sooner than ever, and what will be left of the land will be nothing but blood and power-thirsty humans who will leave no stone unturned to acquire more. There is stress, fear, competition, inequality, and so much more, and in between all of this, devotion can give people balance.
Spending just a few minutes everyday in devotion makes people feel that they are not alone, they are protected, and that there is a higher power that is overlooking everyone.

Forms of devotion

Devotion comes in many different forms. To some, being truthful and abiding by their Dharma is devotion, and to others, performing hawans, paaths, and yagya, is devotion. Even across Yugas, it is said that the forms of devotion have been different.
Some say that earlier people would just meditate as a form of devotion because their connection with God was more direct. Then there came Kings and rulers who would perform elaborate Yagya to please the Gods and receive something in return. Then, devotion became about praying, murti puja, and more.
And today, in Kalyug, it is believed by many people that Naam jap is the most powerful form of devotion.

4/6

What is Naam Jap?

In every Yuga, the connection between humans and the Divine has taken different forms. From intense meditation to rituals, there is so much that humans have done to appease and stay connected to God.
But in Kalyug, when life is more complicated, distractions are endless, and pure-hearted devotion feels difficult, it is said that Naam Jap, or the repetition of God’s name, has become the most important and effective path to devotion. Just by taking the name of the Lord with all your heart, mind, and spirit, you feel closer to them, almost as if there is a connection between you two.

5/6

How to do Naam Jap?

One of the easiest and most beautiful parts of doing Naam jap is that there are no rituals or sacrifices involved in it. All you need is a quiet space, a free mind, and a will to remember the Gods, with their name. It can be done anywhere, be it at home, while walking, cooking, or even before sleeping.
You can chant and repeat the name of God, internally or externally, and this will help keep your focus intact. Or you can use a mala with 108 beads, usually called the Jaap mala, and move it around your fingers as you chant 108 times or more. And another way you can do Naam jap is by simply setting aside 5 minutes of your day, sitting on the ground, and then saying the name out loud.
You could chant and repeat Lord Ram’s name, or Lord Shiva’s, or the Shakti, and all of them will help you feel closer to yourself and to divine energies.

6/6

Why is Naam jap so powerful and important?

In Kalyug, Naam jap is considered the most important and powerful form of devotion because it connects you to the Gods in a very wholesome and holistic way. Chanting and repeating a name is simple, but requires focus and attention, and this shows the higher powers that you are committed. In an age where people would rather spend hours glued to their screens, people who take the effort of Naam jap take the first step towards devotion.
Repeating God’s name brings mental peace, reduces anxiety, and clears negative thoughts, and also cleanses the heart from insecurities and fear.
