Change your destiny

When it comes to fate and destiny, people usually believe in sheer hard work. But, at times, it is the little rituals and luck that can change your life and fate. Be it the small act of feeding someone, or a gesture of keeping aside food for the Gods, all of these together help in changing your life. In many traditions, especially Hinduism, simple acts of devotion, charity, and rituals are believed to invite positive energies and bring about big changes in one’s life. Here we list 6 small practices that can help change your life.

Feeding jaggery to cows

For Hindus all over the world cows are the epitome of sacredness. They are a symbol of life and universal motherhood. And, it is said that if you feed jaggery to cows it will help change your destiny and fate. Feeding jaggery to cows is seen as an act of kindness and charity, and doing it regularly is believed to attract good karma and divine blessings.
As cows nourish all beings with their milk, feeding them jaggery is like nourishing them and caring for them.

Look at your hands first after waking up

A very famous Sanskrit mantra says ‘काराग्रे वसते लक्ष्मी, करमध्ये सरस्वती। करमूले तु गोविन्द, प्रभाते करदर्शनम्’. The meaning of this mantra explains why it is advised to look at your hands first thing after waking up. The mantra refers to the belief that the goddess Lakshmi, who is the deity of wealth, lives in your palms, and Maa Saraswati, the Goddess of creativity, intelligence, and wisdom, lives in the lower part of your hand. It further says that Lord Krishna too resides in your hands and that is why you should look at it immediately after waking up.

Ghee diya near Tulsi plant

The Tulsi plant, also known as holy basil, is very important for Hindus all over the world. And it is said that lighting a ghee diya (lamp) near the Tulsi plant will purify the surroundings and bring in divine blessings. The light from the diya is thought to remove darkness and ignorance, and make way for knowledge and wisdom. Ghee is considered one of the purest substances and improves the spiritual energies that surround the home. And so, lighting a ghee diya is believed to attract positive energy, promote health, and bring prosperity to the house.

Blowing the conch early morning

Blowing the conch, or shankha, early in the morning is a ritual that every Indian tries to follow as religiously as possible. The sound produced by the shankha is considered auspicious and is believed to remove any negative energies and evil spirits from the home and surroundings. The vibrations from the shankha are thought to purify the environment and create a protective shield around the home.

6/7

Keep the first morsel for God

Another ritual that should be followed is that when cooking something, the first food should be reserved for God. When making chapatis, a small one should be made to offer to God, and even from vegetables, a small part should be offered to the Gods. Offering the first morsel of food to God before eating it is considered to be an act of devotion and a means to thank God for all that he has given to us. This practice is also said to bless the food.

7/7

Lighting camphor around the house

Camphor, or kapur, is used in almost every Indian ritual and the scent of kapur is believed to purify the surroundings. Lighting some kapur and talking it around the house is a ritual that helps cleanse the atmosphere in the house and drive away stagnant energies that might be hampering your growth. The strong smell, the smoke it produces, the light that can be seen from burning camphor, all of it together purifies the surroundings and creates a protective aura around the home.
