Every year Hindus across the world celebrate Navratri in the devotion of Maa Durga. There are two major Navratris, the nine nights of Maa Durga, that are celebrated each year. One is the Chaitra Navratri in the month of Chaitra, between March and April, and the next one is Sharada Navratri, which is between September and October.
Navratri is the time to worship Maa Durga, and her 9 forms, over 9 days and nights, and ends with Ram Navami and Kanya Pujan on the 9th day. From Maa Shailputri to Skandmata, devotees worship different forms of Maa Durga and ask for her blessings.

Happy Navratri Wishes & Quotes: Happy Chaitra Navratri 2025: Top 50 Wishes, Messages and Quotes to share with your loved onesRules for Navratri
Just like every other festival and observance, Navratri too comes with certain rules and regulations. And while there are some rituals that people absolutely must do during Navratri, there are some rules that people must follow which include things that should not be done.
For example, one of the most well-known and should-be-followed rules is that people should
avoid eating and buying non-vegetarian food during this time, and any food which has Tamsic qualities in it. Be it eggs, chicken, indulgent sweets, alcohol, or anything else that could increase your negative energy, should be avoided. Why?
Well Navratri is a time dedicated to Shakti, the divine feminine, and people pray and meditate in her name. And during this time, it is important for the mind to be clean, calm, and devoid of any heavy energies. Thus, following a Sattvik diet during this time is the best. It keeps you feeling light and energised, and thus gives your mind ample space to meditate and pray.

Navratri Colours 2025 | 9 Navratri Colors Full List: Nine colours of Navratri and their significanceAnother rule that many people follow during Navratri time is that they
avoid buying electronics or new appliances. It could be something as simple as a phone, or as big as a home theatre. It is commonly advised to pause new buying at this time. Why?
The reason is similar here too with a belief that buying expensive things is a form of indulgence, which in the case of appliances and electronics is material indulgence.
And as the days of Navratri expect people to be grounded, calm, and easy, buying new things defeats the purpose of spiritual calm.
Another belief regarding what to not buy during Navratri days is of black clothes. Black has forever been considered the colour of gloom in Hinduism and be it festivals, occasions, weddings, or simple rituals, wearing black is a big no-no.
And so, during Navratri, even
buying black is frowned upon. People believe that black has the power to attract heavy feelings and energies, and at a time when humans should remain calm, wearing black could really defeat their purpose.
And so people are advised to wear red, yellow, orange, blue, and similar shades that are light on the eyes.
Also added in the list of things one must not buy during Navratri are
sharp objects. It could be knives, scissors, or something as little as needles. It is advised that people should neither buy, nor use any of these items excessively during Navratri time, and also shouldn't borrow it from others.
Many believe that sharp objects carry heavy energies, and if you borrow these from someone during Navratri, it could result in discord in relationships.
Similarly, many people avoid buying iron products during this time as they believe that iron too is heavy in energy and could bring down their energy too.

And people who keep a Nirjala fast either stay without food and water for all 9 days, or keep just one fast at the start and one at the end of Navratri.
