Translation (in English)“It is better to follow one’s own duty, even imperfectly, than to perfectly perform another’s duty. It is better to die while following one’s own path than to live by following another’s path, which is filled with fear.”
The trap of comparing your journey
Comparison rarely begins loudly. It often starts with a simple glance at someone else’s progress. But the mind quickly turns that glance into judgement.
Why am I not there yet?
Did I choose the wrong path?
Should my life look different by now?
The problem with these questions is that they assume everyone is meant to travel the same road. The Gita gently dismantles that idea. Krishna explains that each person carries a different role, nature, and purpose, and therefore their journeys cannot be identical. When we measure ourselves against someone else’s timeline, we forget the invisible parts of life, their struggles, their opportunities, their responsibilities. We compare their visible success with our private uncertainty, and naturally, we feel smaller.
Understanding your own path
The verse introduces a powerful idea: swadharma, or one’s own path of duty. It refers to the work, responsibilities, and direction that arise from who we truly are. Some people thrive in leadership roles. Others create, heal, teach, or quietly support those around them. These differences are not accidents; they are expressions of individual nature.
Krishna tells Arjuna that even if someone walks their own path imperfectly, it is still far better than performing another person’s role perfectly. In other words, authenticity matters more than imitation. Life becomes exhausting when we constantly try to match someone else’s definition of success.
Why someone else’s path creates fear
The Gita uses a striking word to describe following another person’s path: bhayavah, meaning filled with fear. When our choices are driven by comparison rather than clarity, a quiet anxiety begins to grow. Even if we succeed externally, something inside us realises that the path may not truly belong to us. The achievements may look impressive, but they do not feel fully ours.
This happens because the path itself is misaligned with our nature. The mind senses the disconnect, and the result is a lingering unease that success alone cannot fix.
The quiet freedom of walking your own road
Krishna’s advice to Arjuna is not about ambition or competition, it is about alignment. Focus on the work that genuinely belongs to you. Accept that progress may look different from someone else’s journey. Some lives unfold quickly, others slowly. Some paths are visible and celebrated, while others grow quietly in ways the world may never fully see.
The moment you stop measuring your steps against someone else’s timeline, something shifts. Life begins to feel less like a race and more like a journey that is uniquely yours. The Bhagavad Gita reminds us that fulfilment does not come from copying another person’s success. It comes from walking your own path with sincerity, patience, and courage, even when that path looks imperfect from the outside.
