Mantras for children

Sadhguru once said “Mantras could be an extremely good preparatory step. Just one mantra can do such tremendous things to people. They can be an effective force in creating something but only if they come from that kind of a source where there is a complete understanding of all that is sound.” And these lines are enough to educate and aware people about the power that mantras and chanting hold. The vibrations, the sounds, the repetitions, and of course, the positivity that surrounds the people who chant them are simply surreal. And what better than to start the practice of chanting at an early age?So, here we mention 6 mantras that parents must teach their children.

OM

The simple chant of OM is the first mantra that should be taught to young children. With two simple alphabets, and a chant that produces powerful, positive vibrations, the OM has in itself the essence of all universe. Teaching children how to chant and absorb the energies of OM helps them connect with the positivity that is all around, in the Universe, and helps them be at peace. In fact, even if the child cannot chant it themselves, parents should chant OM when they are around to keep them calm, and at peace.

Om Namah Shivaya

Another simple chant, ‘OM Namah Shivaya’ is for Lord Shiva, the God responsible for the transformation of the Universe. OM Namah Shivaya simply means ‘I bow down to Lord Shiva’, and when little children chant this, with their pure heart and intentions, Lord Shiva blesses them with health, wealth, and wisdom. Plus, as Lord Shiva is the destroyer of all evil, when children are aware of this mantra and chant it when they feel danger around them, it helps them be at ease and escape from tough situations.

Gayatri mantra

Mantra - Om Bhur Bhuva Swaha, Tat Savitur Varenyam, Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi, Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat. The Gayatri mantra is a pure, powerful one that is usually taught to kids in schools. The morning prayers in most schools start with the Gayatri mantra as it is the type that attacts wisdom and enlightenment into children’s life. It is also believed that chanting this mantra helps and encourages children to walk in the right direction in life, one that promises wisdom, good health, and intellectual powers.

Mahamrityunjaya mantra

Mantra - Om Trayambakam Yajamahe, Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam, Urvarukmeva Bandhanan, Mritoyr Mukshiya Mamitrat. The Mahamrityunjay mantra is considered to be one of the most powerful mantras known to mankind of Lord Shiva. It is the mantra that gives people protection from ill and evil and heals and saves them from injuries and even life-threatening situations. When children are taught the Mahamrityunjay mantra, they start to feel protected and safe under the wing of Lord Shiva. It is like a comfort during tough times, and a remover of fear.

6/7

Pavamana mantra

The Pavamana mantra goes - Asto Ma Sadgamaya, Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya, Mrityor Ma Amritam Gamaya.
It is a deep, meaningful, and important mantra that kids must learn and also understand. It is like a request to the higher powers to lead us from illusion to reality, from darkness to light, and from untimely death to a long life. It is a common prayer chanted by children in schools, and should be taught by parents as well. When children understand the meaning of this mantra, it is believed that they actively try to walk on the right paths in life, and seek true knowledge.

7/7

Guru mantra

Mantra - Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara, Guru Sakshat Parabrahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah. One of the most important mantras that every child needs to learn in this one. It teaches them about the importance of Gurus, the teachers in school, college, and life, and how their pedestal is similar to Gods, for they too shape and mould humans. It helps them develop an early respect for Gurus and teachers, and makes them realise how important they are in life to learn the right things, and unlearn the wrong ones.
