Women in the city seem to be more comfortable with having a man style their tresses, as we find out. Amy, a software professional and regular at the neighbourhood salon, has no qualms about admitting that she prefers to have her hair styled only by her favourite male hairdresser. Like her, an increasing number of women, especially college-goers and working professionals, today are opting for male hairdressers over their female counterparts, thanks to the rise in the number of unisex salons in the city.
“Male hairdressers are better because they actually listen to what you want, whereas female hairdressers tend to give you what they think would look good on you or what they like,” says Bela Mandora, a college student.
Most women claim that they have confidence in men simply because they seem to be more professional in their approach. Says Manju, a housewife, “Hairstyling, in my opinion, involves a lot of creativity and aesthetics - which contrary to popular belief, is not an alien concept to men. It is not just the different perspective men have on hairdressing, but, they don’t hesitate to go that extra mile to make us look nice.”
Male hairdressers seem to gain brownie points with women, as they turn on their charm and charisma. After all, who doesn’t like being told at the end of a preening session that they look like a million bucks?
“My hairdresser not only does my hair but also boosts my ego and makes me feel as if I am the most good looking woman on earth,” gushes Dhanalakshmi, a BPO employee. “He heaps praise on me and appreciates aspects about me that even my close friends fail to notice,” she adds.
Mars vs VenusHere is why women prefer male hairdressers to females:
- The J factor: They say a woman’s biggest insecurity is another woman. Some women think that a female hairstylist won’t have their best interests in mind, lest they steal her thunder.
- Professionalism: Well-known hairstylist K Chetan says, “When women get bored with their looks, the first thing they look out for is a new hair cut. The way you do your hair can either make or break your look. Keeping these critical aspects in mind, I personally feel that men are extra cautious and so carry out their duties with utmost professionalism.”
- Creativity: While men and women are equals in terms of competence, most male hairstylists tend to be more flamboyant and are perceived to be more creative.
