They filed the case in 2022, alleging Daily Mail journalists hired shady private eyes from 1993-2011 to hack voicemails, tap landlines, and "blag" (deceptively snag) their confidential information like health records and travel details. Senior editors are also being questioned in this regard. But, Associated calls it "preposterous smears," blaming "leaky" social circles for the tips and denying all the allegations against it.

The trial

This didn't happen overnight. Heated pre-trial hearings debated if the case was too old (six-year limit). In November 2023, Judge Matthew Nicklin greenlit it, overriding time-bar pleas. 2024 brought a boost to the case as the UK government allowed Leveson Inquiry docs (that 2011-12 probe into News of the World hacking). But limits hit when Prince Harry couldn't drag in his sister-in-law and Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton's claims, and so, the focus narrowed to specific incidents of privacy breach only.
