Psychology tips to be happier in life

"Happiness is not by chance, but by choice." — Jim Rohn
And, rightly so! Happiness isn’t about constant excitement or perfection— instead it is built on daily habits that nurture your mental well-being. Psychology shows that happiness often comes from simple, everyday choices that help us stay balanced, connected, and fulfilled. Here we list some of them:

2/6

Practice gratitude daily

Gratitude is one of the most powerful tools for increasing one's happiness. According to an article on PsychCentral, regularly acknowledging the good things in life and being grateful for what you have— whether big or small— helps rewire your brain to focus on positivity and the good things in life.
So, practise writing down three things that you’re grateful for every day-- this will strengthen your emotional well-being and reduce negative thinking.

3/6

Build meaningful relationships

Our interpersonal relationships have a huge impact on our emotional well-being and long-term happiness. A 2024 study in Frontiers in Psychology found that social support from family, friends, and significant people in our lives is positively linked with increased positive affect and reduced anxiety and depression.

Another study by Harvard, which ran for over 80-years, titled 'Study of Adult Development' found that good relationships, not wealth or fame, are the strongest indicators of a happy and healthy life.

So, make time for your beloved friends and family and spend quality time with them. Even small gestures— like a phone call or a shared laugh— can uplift your mood.

4/6

Practice mindfulness in everyday life

Simple daily habits of meditating and practising mindfulness help you stay centred and in the present moment rather than worrying about the past or future.
A 2024 study published in the British Journal of Health Psychology found that practising just 10 minutes of mindfulness every day decreased anxiety by 12.6% and depression by 19.2%. It also improved one's overall well-being and positive attitudes toward health.
So, start by meditating at least for 10 minutes a day and practising mindfulness in everyday life. Over time, it can help you appreciate the smaller and joyful moments in life and be at peace more.

5/6

Do things that give you 'flow' and make you happy

'Flow' is a state of deep focus and enjoyment that happens when you’re fully immersed in an activity— like painting, writing, or playing a sport. Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi described it as a key ingredient to happiness because it creates a sense of purpose and fulfillment. When you’re in flow, time seems to disappear, and stress fades away. To experience this, engage in activities that you truly love and enjoy.

6/6

Be kind to everyone

Being kind to others and helping them, without any expectation in return, does make one feel happy in life. Practising small acts of kindness-- like complimenting someone, volunteering, or simply listening— can trigger the release of feel-good hormones like dopamine and oxytocin which can help uplift one's mood.
