How to master self-control

In a world overflowing with several kinds of temptations, addictions, and distractions, mastering the art of controlling yourself efficiently and effectively is what’ll prevent you from indulging in harmful and self-sabotaging practices and having to make consciously beneficial choices for your future. The ability to manage your urges and impulses in the modern world can be challenging but immensely rewarding, working as the ultimate key to success, overall well-being, and a purposeful life. If you want to learn how to master self-control, to achieve confidence, discipline, and meaning in life, delve in! We present to you 5 remarkable strategies to empower you, leading you to take charge of your actions and transform them into something incredibly powerful and rewarding.

2/6

Know your triggers

The first and most important step towards mastering self-control is to recognize what feelings and situations lead to you, losing control. It can be subjective and unique to every individual, but some of the most common ones might be certain places or atmospheres, stressful situations, or boredom. Understanding what it is that triggers you, and accepting the fact truthfully can help you move one step toward achieving your goal of gaining control over yourself.

3/6

Set clear and realistic goals

It is easy to say that you’ll be going to gain self-control in one day, setting difficult and unrealistic goals for yourself, such as “Starting from today, I am not going to use social media”, or “I will work out 7 days a week”. These are some common examples of unrealistic goals. The real objective is to slowly and steadily increase your resistance and work consistently towards the issue, and not try to achieve something in a day or two, as however hard you try, it’s not possible. Try having easily achievable goals and slowly increase their effectiveness, such as “I will only spend 30 minutes on social media”, or “I will workout for 30 minutes, four days a week”.

4/6

Practice waiting before acting

This is a powerful strategy that can effectively help you master the art of self-control. Simply try to delay gratification. It means, learning to wait for a better outcome or reward rather than seeking instant pleasure. For instance, If you are feeling an uncontrollable urge to buy something impulsively, deep down knowing that it isn’t worth the money, or that it won’t come to use, take a break, distract yourself from it, and wait for a while. It often occurs when the initial urge or the heat of the moment fades away, you’ll make a wiser and better decision aligning with your best self.

5/6

Establishing positive routines

Fighting off negative emotions by implementing positive ones has always been a powerful and effective strategy. Create daily or weekly routines that help you indulge in good habits. Positive yet simple habits one can effectively follow include a regular workout routine, planning healthy and nutritious meals, as well as establishing a morning or night routine that involves practices such as mindfulness and meditation, self-care, and more.

6/6

Be compassionate to yourself

Knowing that you are doing all you can to gain self-control and accepting and loving yourself the way you are, without caveats is important. Remember that you can work towards improving yourself while also loving yourself exactly as you are. Just like parents love their children without any conditions or implications, you have to do exactly that! Loving yourself unconditionally, while also guiding yourself towards the better and improved version of yourself.
