Things not to say at interviews

Considering the volatile job market these days, looking for a suitable job and clearing the test for it has become stressful for many professionals. Walking into an interview can feel like stepping onto a stage: Where all eyes are on you, and you try your best to give the right answers. Yet, many candidates makes common mistakes and miss the mark for the job, not because they lack skills, but because of small errors in preparation or presentation. But, these are simple mistakes that can be avoided easily. To help you ace the interview, here we list some mistakes to avoid and what to do instead:

2/6

Mistake: Failing to research the company

When you go for an interview, it is important to first know about the company, their work culture and their products. Going unprepared for an interview may look as if you are not interested in the profile, and this can go against you.

Instead: Spend time on the company’s website, social media pages, research about their recent news articles. Note any major projects, or leadership changes in the company. This will make you appear as genuinely enthusiastic about the company and your new role.

3/6

Mistake: Arriving late or dressed inappropriately

Showing up late for the interview or being too overdressed or underdressed sends the wrong message about your reliability and fit.

Instead: Plan your journey in advance and aim to arrive 10–15 minutes before the interview. Dress up according to the company's culture: business casual for startups, a suit for more formal industries. Polished shoes and minimal accessories complete the look. Being punctual and professional makes you look as a serious candidate for the role.

4/6

Mistake: Poor body language

If you have a poor body language-- like avoiding eye contact, slouching, or fidgeting-- it can show that you are not confident enough.

Instead: Do not slouch and sit up straight, maintain relaxed eye contact, and offer a firm but friendly handshake. Smile genuinely when appropriate, and be confident while answering.

5/6

Mistake: Fumbling while answering

Giving unfocused answers or fumbling while talking shows that you are not confident and don't know much about the topics.

Instead: Give structured answers and be to the point. This shows that you are knowledgeable and can give calm, composed answers under pressure.

6/6

Mistake: Not asking thoughtful questions

In most interviews, at the end the candidate is asked if they have any questions or queries. When you do not ask anything it might give the impression that you are not interested in the job or are not confident.

Instead: Prepare 3–5 questions in advance that reflect your curiosity about the new job profile. Ask about team dynamics, work culture, key challenges in the role, etc. This shows that you are interested in the new job.
